Two kinda people in Westerly those who make soupy and those who buy it.

When my wife was working in real estate, we used to joke that having a “good basement for soupy” was a major selling point in Westerly.

My friend’s parents bought a house in Westerly specifically for the “soupy room“

I'm in the third group - people who know enough of the first kind of people that we get gifted enough to fill all our soupy needs. I've got 3/4 of a stick left now and I'm guaranteed to be offered another before I run out.

That’s funny I had no idea that was a thing! I’ve only known one person from Westerly and he made his own soupy. I’m one for one.

What the Italians in Westerly won’t share, is the exact recipe for their soupy. They will pass it down to family only. You almost need to be a made man to learn the way of the soupy. I can respect that. Glad to see the tradition still in practice. Good soupy is easy to buy, westerly packing, great soupy is given to you by someone you know, who knows a guy.

Got my recipe from a guy who has been makin it for 70 years. Just asked nicely.

Just for our own use. We had a large group making it so we'll all get a fair share of the goods. Lots of charchoochie boards to come.

When was this? Isn't this late in the season? And when will these be ready to eat?

4

WestBoundExitSign OP t1_j6d8nb1 wrote

We made it yesterday. And it's the normal time of year to make it, I think. We did it the same time last year. And it will take 2-3 months to cure.

13

PJfanRI t1_j6ey41c wrote

This is the towards the end of soupy making season, but there are still a couple more weeks. We usually start in late December and roll through mid February. This year we might have to shut it down early due to the damp winter.

I want to like Westerly Packing but both times I've been there I wasn't super impressed. What do you usually get? I've had things like their bacon and NY Strips, but that's it. Both were just okay, maybe I'm just getting the wrong stuff.

Have lived in Westerly almost 50 years and have been mainly vegetarian for most of that time, but when I see soupy on a party platter or on a breakfast menu (and several local restaurants offer it), I can’t resist.

This reminds me of a cellar I was in, rural Italy, cured meats hanging everywhere, dank smelling, but the most buttery meat I’ve ever eaten, with some estate grown wine.
