I will never understand this...

Bank tells me "you authorized them to take money from your account"

Me "but I dont have money, so there's nothing for them to take"

Bank "we gave them our money and now you have to pay us back with a 500% fee"

Me "fine. Can you just reject requests for payment in the future when I dont have funds."

Bank ".... no...."

Me "wh...why not?"

Bank "we'll waive the fee this time, but next time you have to pay"

Right? Like wtf. If I don't have the money, CANCEL THE FUCKING CHARGE

Turn OFF overdraft 'protection'. It protects the bank, not you.

Mandatory Opt-out only was made illegal I think back in 2012, but if you Opted in when you opened idk any laws stating you have to be able to opt back out.

Theletterkay t1_irausg5 wrote

Not necessarily! I use a credit union and overdraft protection with them means thats if you are going to over draft by less than $50, they can take the amount from your savings to use for the charge. They then send a text that your overdraft took money from your savings and that future overdrafts would be blocked unless you call them to unlock overdraft protection again. (You can do this in the app as well).

My CU doesnt ever allow overdrafts otherwise. They do offer a credit card with no fees that they recommend for people who travel and might end up in situations where they need more money than planned or their debit card doesnt go through.

Alis451 t1_irapy86 wrote

It protects you from being embarrassed for having your card declined, yes that is how they frame it, and yes it is stupid.

1

Theletterkay t1_iravdgl wrote

My credit union frames it as letting you get gas even if you dont have enough money. If you have kids they will say its getting diapers or food without having enough.

But my bank doesnt allow real overdrafts. If you overdraft but have money in a savings account, they will take money from that account to cover the purchase. Only once until you tell them to reactivate it.

DrunkFarmer t1_ir8q81n wrote

It’s called overdraft protection, if you have it you can overdraft and get fucked. If you don’t have overdraft protection then they will deny overdrafts. Conveniently named on purpose.

No, get a Credit Union. I have accounts at 3 different Credit Unions. No monthly fees, low rates, nice people. Many Credit Unions started as only for certain employers or industries, most have now switched to geographic area limitations. IE Golden One used to be only state employees, then went to five county area, now anyone in California can join. Worried about ATM access? CCs have a network of over 25,000 ATMs.

Should be percent of your income/wealth/etc so if a ceo gets a tix then it’s hundred thousand dollars for speeding . If poor then only a little.

Most rich people work really hard to report a small NET income. "My business needed a 2nd $900k Rolls Royce, so this year my net profit was -10k"

Barfing_Rat t1_ir8bb67 wrote

The problem is those who have exceeding wealthy often have money stowed away in stock and stuff.

Personally I think once someone make or have more than certain amount, they should be forced to pay with stocks or whatever. That way it will hurt more than them spending what they will make in a few hours by doing literally nothing.

12

DBeumont t1_ir8uhuy wrote

Stocks are part of "wealth."

7

Barfing_Rat t1_ir8vrxb wrote

Once someone have enough stocks, they pretty much make their income off stock alone.

Fining someone like this won’t do a thing. Take the stock away and they will feel the pinch!

3

BackwardPalindrome t1_ir9acpo wrote

Fine stocks harder. Fine them more than the value of their holdings. There are a huge amount of ways around this without giving the government more confiscatory power without any reason.

Makes me wonder if we have similar absurdities in Austria or other European countries.

Teacherofmice t1_ir7xnfk wrote

People given a $100 fine may have to pay $500 when most people don't just have $1000 laying around. That escalated quickly.

What do they even mean by these additional charges which could total 5 times the cost of the fine? I've had speeding and parking tickets. I pay the amount I'm fined and that's it.

4

alcohall183 t1_ir9k8sd wrote

Fine is $200. Court costs (even if you don't go to court for it) are $60. Victims compensation fund $50. Electronic device usage (the radar detector) $50. Etc... There are over 5 fees on every ticket. No matter what the ticket is for you pay these fees. So a $2 ticket can be a $100 ticket by the time they get done with adding it up.

4

Theletterkay t1_iravz5z wrote

In texas every ticket makes you play into the road repair fund and veterans fund. Which im kind of ok with.

1

Xavierkill22 t1_iraixbq wrote

If you're concerned with overdraft fees just get a debit card and not a credit card from a bank that doesn't allow overdrafting. This will automatically cancel the fees and prevent such situations. Sutton bank does such and this is why people on Cashapp can't overdraft.

Egrizzzzz t1_iraqywi wrote

This is indeed great news, especially getting rid of court fines for minors and drivers license suspensions over unpaid court fees. We are too car dependent a nation to suspend a license for anything less than dangerous offenses. In most of the country not having a car is a one way ticket to unemployment. How is that supposed to help one repay fees?

This is how things are in a huge number of communities. The government budget counts on the fees they charge people for a minor infraction then late fees on top of late fees on top of jail fees. It is one of the things that people were protesting in Ferguson, Missouri USA when Michael Brown was killed by an asshat cop. The judges would give fines so that their salaries could be paid by the budget propped up by the fines they gave. Legal Extortion.
