Source: I helped build Bing (first Windows Live Search) in China (and could tell you all sorts of stories of government interference).

Wasn't it originally MSN before it was Windows Live Search? AFAIK, the rename was just to promote their social network.

In the U.S. it was. In China, we started with Windows Live search (there may have been an MSN Search earlier, in China, that was utilizing some 3rd party search of some sort. I don't recall exactly.).
