So that's Sony's solution to bad battery life.

Meh, don't screw over the retailer because of Sony's bullshit. Better to fix the controller or get a cheap 2 year warranty on it.

Often won't work because they will point you to Sony, and Sony know the serial numbers.

Didrox13 t1_j3yw200 wrote

That's bad luck. They aren't the most durable, but they shouldn't be dying like that. For reference, it's the same hardware as the PS4, Xbox and switch pro controllers (default controllers, not stuff like the Xbox elite controller)

CheapBootlegger t1_j3rhh42 wrote

I didn't know this was an issue until just now; I thought only the Switch had the problem.

I don't recall the PS2 or GameCube having drift issues, I wonder why these consoles do.

Don't buy new controllers, fix the ones you have. DS4 are extremely easy to repair, DualSense are similar but slightly less so.

−1

Cosmiccomedian333 t1_j3xddhu wrote

Not long enough... lets see here , the white one came with the cosole and ive had it since launch and it was the first to get drift.... Bought the crimson red controller and it has drift also and so does the black one... mainly using the camo controller now as it is the newest and still has yet to drift.

1

stygian07 t1_j3z9rla wrote

So did the OG controller drift within like a year or something? I'm only asking so I can gauge mine out of curiosity. I've had these 2 DualSenses for about 6 months now and I'm gonna see how far it goes.

I've always been skeptical of peoples anecdotes about drift sometimes because as long as we're not talking about joycons I feel like it comes down to usage only because the last time I got drift was on my dualshock 4 that I left to gather dust and even then that took 3 years to start drifting. started buying controller pouches ever since.

Regardless, I do believe that as long as you're not bashing the controller against a wall It shouldn't drift due to prolonged use but wear and tear is also a thing so I don't really know where to stand here.

1

Didrox13 t1_j3yvwb3 wrote

The standard ps4, ps5, xbox and switch pro controllers all use the same stickbox and have similar drifting rates/issues.

We have one PS3 controller that gets VERY occasional use as a streaming device and we charge it like twice a year. When covid was in full swing I replayed Red Dead 1 and it lasted about 3 days with constant use before needing to be charged. And it weighs less than the PS4 controller...

Honestly the best part of the Xbox controller is that it uses AA batteries.

If it dies, I can just swap my rechargeable AAs with the ones on my charger. And if the batteries deteriorate over time I can get replacements for cheap because of how ubiquitous AA are, it's a nice little right to repair feature.

Meanwhile, my PS controllers might as well be wired.

23

garlicluv t1_j3qmvut wrote

>had to purchase the GoW controller

With all due respect, they're not doing anything unethical. If you're willing to pay for exactly the same product functionally with some aesthetic changes, it makes total sense to charge you for it.

You're willing to pay for every little detail and variation.

You don't have to purchase it. Just use a normal controller.

−3

Smokemonster421 t1_j3qpjab wrote

You missed the point. I was disappointed that my GoW bundle came with a normal controller when, in the past, the featured controller has been included with the bundle. I was going to buy a second controller anyway.

Never said they're being unethical. And of course a business has the goal of profit. Just stinks that every company has adapted this habit of charging extra for every little detail they can.

14

garlicluv t1_j3qqj8v wrote

>. I was disappointed that my GoW bundle came with a normal controller when, in the past, the featured controller has been included with the bundle. I was going to buy a second controller anyway.

My bad, looks like I did.

Still though, we all live in a global economy predicated and hinged on year on year growth, we're just living downstream from that.

4

nohumanape t1_j3mwfxr wrote

Why? I mean, there have been unofficial bundles that include a second controller. But why would this come from Sony? I'd feel like most PS5 owners would rather have a special second controller that isn't the standard white. What games would even require two controllers?

11

WasteOfLife t1_j3n12po wrote

At this point Sony knows people will spend the extra money on the bundle JUST to get a PS5, easy attach rate and margin growth.

21

smoothjedi t1_j3n6zi5 wrote

I agree here. Personally I love the purple one, but I of course got a white one with the ps5 and got the GoW one. Having a second one is nice so I can hot swap if the battery is low. However, I feel like I'm shut out of even considering getting that purple one. I mean, if it's hard to justify a second, why would I ever think of getting a third?!

Personally I wish instead of these two controller versions they'd have a no controller version with either a voucher for one at the same price or for $50+ cheaper.

7

FLHCv2 t1_j3nfql0 wrote

>What games would even require two controllers?

Completely not on topic but I fucking hate how the gaming industry successfully made it almost a requirement that it's 1 person per console if you want to game with friends or family.

Have two kids that are heavy gamers that want to play games with each other? Two PS5s.

7

nohumanape t1_j3ngqw8 wrote

As someone else pointed out to me, fighting games (like Street Fighter) and sports games (like Madden and FIFA) still have local multiplayer. But that is a far cry from the olden days of local couch multiplayer or co-op. And none of these are split-screen.

It's really too bad, because those kinds of games were a ton of fun. I wonder if they will see a resurgence at some point in the future? Seems like something someone might tap into at some point and people go crazy for it in some way that results in a few fairly high profile games in a relitively short period of time.

nohumanape t1_j3nae9e wrote

2

garlicluv t1_j3qn2jj wrote

>I'd feel like most PS5 owners would rather have a special second controller

Nah, most people don't care about that. Most people would welcome two controllers in their bundle.

Most gamers aren't as obsessed as the ones on reddit.

0

Dangerous-Charity-47 t1_j3qrdbh wrote

I don't game often but when I do, I play 10+ hours. In that time I have to switch controller after about 5 - 6 hours. Depends on the game and how many features of the new PS5 controllers they are using. IMO batteries in PS5 controllers don't last as long as batteries in PS4 controllers.

So there, one controller is not enough for me.

Between the NES emulator (Raspberry Pi) and the PS3 (Ragdoll Kung Fu, LBP Karting) they have some good choices, but the PS4 options have been slimmer. Basically they play It Takes Two, Minecraft, Quake, and a shitload of Brawlhalla.
