How many android owners are buying Apple TVs over Roku or Chromecasts? Even for people already in the Apple ecosystem, an Apple TV is probably one of the last things they buy.
-DementedAvenger- t1_j4q2gnq wrote
There are many people in the 50+ age range that do not care what ecosystem their devices are part of. They get the android phone because their family recommends it, but then turn around and get an Apple TV because a friend of theirs recommended it. And they don’t really care how these devices interact with one another.

Does anyone recommend Apple TVs outside of NA? Never seen one in the wild in Europe
spazzardnope t1_j4re2d6 wrote
I’m in the UK and have owned several since the PowerPC days when you could install OS X on them with a bit of tinkering and turn them into pseudo Mac Mini’s. It helps that they used to give them out free with MacBooks and iMacs if you were a student or working in education. Now you just get an Apple media voucher.

Really? We have one on each tv in our summer home in Italy and most of our friends use them since they’re better than the crappy OS that comes with the tv.

Anywhere I went (Totals to France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Cyprus and where I live, Turkey) it was people using stuff like Mi Boxes, Bravia or Philips TVs with preloaded Google TV or TVs with Amazon Fire OS. Although it is obvious that the usage count is not 0, from what I have seen, it is not widespread, although I can guess that there obviously are groups like you lot who use it.
b1e t1_j4r3hfz wrote
I mean in the US I wouldn’t say it’s super widespread either. Most people just use whatever chrome OS comes on their TV.
Main reason to get one is the vastly better UI + responsiveness, proper HDR support, and sometimes better streaming quality.

I have two smart TVs and use an Apple TV on both of them for exactly those reasons.

Sounds like ignorance to me.

Ignorance isn’t always bad. The option to have several good products made by different companies is a good thing.
And they should reasonably be able to function without a handful of other thousand-dollar devices.

My dad hates Apple products from PCs to their phones but he likes Apple music for their lossless and dolby atmos music. So he has an apple TV that he uses for music
Edwunclerthe3rd t1_j4v3202 wrote
Just out of curiosity, does he have a device that will actually output this sound? LG phones had Quad DAC but you still needed a good music app and output device

Uses his PC and his Samsung Phone. He also has a Small USBc DAC
MrGeekman t1_j4r7tfj wrote
Why didn't he just sign up for either Tidal or Spotify HiFi?

I have an Android and Apple TV. Remote alone is worth it for me, also being able to hardwire it's network access is preferable. I also have a Chromecast on the same TV if I ever want to stream anything from my phone.
DnB925Art t1_j4t6jw7 wrote
Could also hardwire Chromecast as well FYI
twogoodshoes t1_j4taofs wrote
Don't you need an adapter? I like how it's integrated on the Apple TV.. I believe Roku has or had a model with Ethernet port as well, but I'm not a fan of their os and interface.
DnB925Art t1_j65lfex wrote
Yes you have to buy one but it's like $20 give or take
Nawnp t1_j4twhu5 wrote
Of note you can stream your Android to the Apple TV, I think it's only native to certain brands and a paid app otherwise though.
They_Call_Me_Ted t1_j4s40aa wrote
I’d be curious to know this as well. I’m not entirely sure it’s “the last thing they buy” considering it’s dirt cheap in comparison to other Apple products and (arguably) a very nice product with lots of great features, but I could definitely be wrong here.
Full disclosure, I’m an Apple fanboy for sure but I’m also a UX designer and really appreciate how easy the Apple TV interface is to use. I bought my 72 year old mother one for Christmas a couple years ago (she’s an Android user) and it’s honestly the only tech she doesn’t call me asking how to use. In fact, she freaking loves that thing.

This is also an issue with the apple tv app on other devices.
Nawnp t1_j4twt4u wrote
Apple TV is far superior OS to other tv interfaces, UP Next is a top tier app feature.

It's the fastest and the only one to support Wifi 6 which was crucial to me (wifi 5 couldn't stream all my high bitrate library from plex). I would go for newer Nvidia Shield if it existed.
