This is just a tiny microcosm of the absolute brilliance and utter dominance displayed by Garbrandt during that fight. He straight worked Cruz and won the belt, and then when Dana White put it around his waist Cody gave it to a young man who at that moment was fighting a battle most of us will never know. His name is Maddux Maple. Look it up.

Yeah I remember watching this and thinking "Holy shit.. he's on autopilot." He looked so comfortable and focused. He had an answer for everything and made Cruz look like it was his first day fighting. Pretty awesome still. I liked Cody a ton, I hope he can have some bigger wins in his career again. Tone the temper down a bit and get back to whatever this was.

Garbbrandt Really overachieved in this fight, he hasn't looked remotely close to this good since.

Aside from Carla Esparza, Cody garbrandt is easily one of the worst fighters to ever become champ.

This is my favorite fight. If only he used that head mooment more often. But usually against people who hit harder than Dom he doesn't do this and he just trades.

It was weird because Dom kept talking about how emotional Cody was, basically talking about how stupid he is. And this was absolutely surgical. I guess it was just that dream matchup, but part of me hopes to see him fight like that again every single fight.

1K_Games t1_j7nr37a wrote

The difference is that Cody absolutely earned it. He knocked out all but one guy in his run to the belt, in a weight class that is not known for heavy hands. And then he absolutely styled on the guy who at that time (and still even is arguably now) the Bantam GOAT.

Carla's first fight in the UFC was for the belt against a very young and green Rose. honestly Carla's last run to the belt was more impressive, she had a string of good victories. It was the title fight itself that was the disappointment. And I don't think that can be put on Carla, she attempted 11 takedowns and only threw 4 less strikes than Rose.

What can you do when someone doesn't want to fight? When they refuse to risk absolutely anything? I understand applying pressure (and Carla did), but it's supposed to be two people fighting and it's such a massive risk to telegraph from that far out because your opponent doesn't want to fight. So yes, the win is not impressive, but I don't think it's that straight forward.

Every so often the stars align and you see someone do some god like shit in a fight and this is one of them, this is up there with cerrones combo, mighty mouses arm bar, fedor surviving that power bomb etc in my opinion, he absolutely styled on cruz. So entertaining to watch as a fan

I mean, yes technically? But that was also the point. These guys talked mad shit to each other leading up to this fight, and Cody absolutely schooled Cruz through the entire thing. Might’ve disrespectful, but Cruz said plenty of disrespectful stuff leading up to it lol

There's an interview with Cody where he talks about his downfall in the UFC. He says that after he had his son, he lost the passion to train. His father was absent most his life and he didn't want to do that to his son. He wanted to be there for every single moment. So he would cut training sessions short or skip workouts to be home with his son. It sucks that he couldn't do both or find a balance. Love him or hate him, he's trying to break the cycle that is the shit of T-county.

I have to feel like Cody and his team scouted Dom and practiced against this specific set of attack. At the least they broke down punch attacks and muscle trained against them.

Looks like peak Ali ducking his opponents' attacks.

It’s a shame we’ll never know how much Dillashaw’s juicing changed their first fight. If Garbrandt wins their first meeting, I think his career goes very differently. Dude got KO’d a bunch after that loss, trying to get it back.

Not to say TJ wasn’t displaying insane skill, point blank. I remember (I think leading up to tha tfight) TJ and his trainer were on Joe Rogan and boasting about his insane health and conditioning and (in hindsight) their explanations seemed so suspect.
