I have the HD800S as well but I still appreciate the HD6XX, it is a very different headphone. Technically, the HD800S is much better, but tonally, the HD6XX, and there are times I prefer that. It's also simply more compact, which can be better if lying in bed. To be honest the logical tonal upgrades to the HD6XX are really more the Focal Clear and Utopia, which I listen to more than the HD800S.
"Comforting" is right.
blorg OP t1_iwm59s0 wrote
It's still not the same, the HD800S EQs extremely well but is always going to sound somewhat ethereal and diffuse. It's a much better headphone technically, but the HD6XX does provide a different, more intimate presentation and is tonally possibly more "right" and natural sounding out of the box than any other headphone. If I could only pick one, sure I'd take the HD800S any day and EQ it. But for $199 can probably afford to keep the HD6XX around too.

I’ve been thinking of upgrading to the Focal Clear but hesitant because of the weight difference compared to the HD6x0. Comfort is a big factor for me because I wear headphones for 5+ hours a day. How is the comfort on the Clear in your opinion for long hour usage?
Brymlo t1_iwmjtrp wrote
The HD25 are good on-ears for travel. Light, compact, and good sound.
blorg OP t1_iwmjwxc wrote
I find it extremely comfortable, if anything the Clear is more comfortable than the HD6XX/HD600 because the clamp force is lower. It's not too low, it's still perfectly stable, just right. The HD6X0s aren't problematic for me, but I feel the clamp more, the Focals just dissolve away more. The HD800S is also very comfortable and with a light clamp, incidentally, but the Focals feel just a bit more stable.
For my head, at least, Focal make extremely comfortable headphones, I can wear them indefinitely. I did add a headband cover which spreads out the contact a bit but it's comfortable either way.
One issue with the Clear, it has a bit of a creak. It's not a major problem actually on the head but it does creak a lot putting it on, or handling it off the head. Just sort of a "$1,000 headphone shouldn't really do this" sort of thing.

Hot take. Don’t buy these. Sure they are REALLY good sounding and resolving more than other headphones if these are your first real audiophile cans but they don’t have significant base if you listen to EDM, rap, R&B, or other bass requiring genres. They have almost zero soundstage and the imaging is murky at best. These were my first nice headphones and while again, they sound super nice, I began to realize how much they were lacking because the bass and soundstage are big componentes of music that I can’t be without and feel happy about my purchase or listening experience.

That is very helpful. Thank you. Clamp force actually doesn’t bother me that much. I’m one of those maniacs who doesn’t feel the need to stretch the headband on a brand new HD600 lol. But I dislike headphones that dig into the top of my head after wearing them for awhile. Unfortunately most higher end headphones are quite heavy so a lot of good sounding ones are out of my consideration. The NDH30 I tried recently had this problem even though it is just 350 grams. I had to return it due to the discomfort even though it sounded great. The DT 900 pro X has about the same weight but for some reason I don’t have a problem with it. So it is hard to tell with just the weight alone.
Yes the creak! I tried the Clear MG at a local store and that was the first thing I noticed as I was putting it on. I agree an expensive headphone shouldn’t be doing that. Definitely felt a bit cheap but everything else on it is super nice that kind of make up for it I guess lol. I’ve only tried it at the store so I couldn’t tell the long term usage on it. Thanks for the help!

Will_Poke_Brains t1_iwmr8qu wrote
Oh I know, but mind you before headphones got really popular like they have people were still actually saying how the bass on 650’s was still good for those genres and people said this just isn’t a headphone for BASSheads. As if wanting a headphone that can produce deep bass makes someone a basshead, as opposed to wanting the bass over pronounced for fun. It just wasn’t accurate advice from the community back then and you can’t get information on soundstage or imagining in a sound signature curve (or whatever that response curve thing is called). People talk about how great the headphone is at what it does but its really made clear about what it can’t do. At least back when I was buying headphones in like 2015. Its a great can for what it does I just didn’t want someone to regret their first high end purchase for a can that can’t do it all regardless of how well.

From a quick Google I got:
>When I got my K7xx, they didn't ding me. However, other items over time they have. I'm not sure what's their criteria. I will say, in general, the smaller the item, the likelier they will just let it by. However, if they do decide to value it, you will be charged $9.99 (fee) + HST/GST on (CAD$ converted value). There was no duty on my audio gear.
There's also another guy in this thread saying he wasn't charged for importing something to Canada. I'd expect to be charged but it's luck of the draw to an extent.
That doesn't sound unreasonable to me. I am European, I currently live in Thailand, in both importing stuff from outside we need to pay customs duty, VAT and the shipping company handling fee.
$10 CAD plus only the GST (5-15%) just doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Most of this is tax, that's a thing we all pay, this is what gets you schools and healthcare. It's still a good price for this headphone.
I explicitly said, expect to pay VAT on import. Sometimes, depending on country, it does just slip through, but I expect to pay it on anything I import. You pay it on anything you buy within the country, it's just baked into the price by the importer already (in every country that isn't the US or Canada, prices are quoted tax inclusive).
I paid $60 shipping on a headphone from Adorama, $105 from Audeze. The tax and shipping company fee is on top, I still have to pay that. And with couriers like these use, it's unavoidable, they always charge you. If something is sent USPS as it sounds like Drop do, there's a chance it won't be charged.
So yes $15-20 looks very reasonable.
