HD800S > Roon with Oratory Harman EQ adjusted to be a tad bit warmer and Jan Meier's Crossfeed > iFi Micro IDSD Signature = Very resolving headphones while at the same time not fatiquing when listening for a long period.

Some stories: Last week I auditioned some headphones, looking for a potential upgrade to the HD800S. I tried on the Empyreans, they are very warm and musical, not as detailed as the HD800S but very relaxing to listen to. Next, the Arya Stealths are surprisingly very balanced with more bass than the HD800S, although I found the build quality to not be that great. Lastly, I tried the HD820 just for fun, however, I was surprised that for a closed back, the soundstage and detail retrieval are the exact same as the HD800S, with the only downside being that weird mid tuning.

In conclusion, I decided to end my headphone journey with the HD800S (for now) and move on to upgrading my speakers instead. I find that the HD800S offers the best value for pair of Hi-end cans (I got it on sale for around $1,200), great build quality with unmatched soundstage and neutral-bright tuning, allowing you to EQ it to however you like and therefore is a great all rounder IMO.

I really didn't like the Oratory preset with the 800S, but yeah these are way good enough for me to call them endgame. I'll stick with it until I can try out a Final D8000/newest Yamaha and maybe they'll take the throne

Love my 800s. What a versatile joy they are and I’m happy with them like 80% of the time. However, I do like me some metal from time to time and I find it that I either have to apply a very heavy eq on my 800s or go for another set of cans. Ended up getting the dca aeons as it felt just wrong butchering the 800s sound. Though I wouldn’t say it was because 800s lack base. In my opinion their base is just fine. It’s just their rich detail and lightness is what makes me enjoy them.

Why not? The HD800s have really damn good soundstage and I don't know any other headphone that comes close at its price point. But the sound signature isn't quite my cuppa tea. So why not fix it literally for free? If I want a perfect headphone I'd have to buy the HE-1. But I don't have that kinda money, so I tune what I DO have to more suit my liking.

On Android you can use Wavelet. It's incredibly easy to use. On Windows you can use Equalizer APO with the Peace GUI. It's not as easy to use as Wavelet but there are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to use it. But once it's set up, you don't really have to touch it anymore. For EQ profiles, I'd go with one from u/oratory1990 (which you can find on r/oratory1990) and edit that to your liking (if necessary).

Words taken from my GF (who’s not a weeb). I was a bit shy to admit I like listening to anime music, so she said “embrace yourself” lol. Guess she’s a keeper.

Yeah man, Chainsaw Man OP/EDs are straight fire. Right now I'm digging the Mushoku Tensei's OSTs, very atmospheric. I find Japanese songs unique, fun and not boring compared to many copy-paste trendy pop songs, although, I'm a big fan of John Mayer.

My favourite Japanese band is RADWIMPS!

That is a very tough question. I absolutely love Prushka Sequence and Rumble of Scientific Triumph, but Old Stories, Tomorrowland, and Faputa are all godly out of the new OST. Kevin Penkin nailed it again.

It's crazy how much CSM is contributing to my playlist rn yea XD

I've heard of that anime, gonna check it out soon :) If you like instrumental stuff, I'd give the Irisu Syndrome playlist a listen. I recently been on a spree with cheap VNs from Steam and the most recent one I read was "Sound of Drop: Fall Into Poison" and man I love this track and this one. The second one plays at the start of the novel and that shit sucked me in hard lol (I was running a timer to see if I wanted to keep it xD). Love these composers.

I mostly just listen to japanese music and older rock/rap so I agree with you on that last part, don't really like newer artists except for a few (Doja Cat has some nice songs). Like you said, the variedness of japanese music is a big part of that draw, especially these newer songs. Like, I fucking love the dude's voice from one of Chainsaw Man's outros. So damn good. I don't forgive MAPPA for the AOT stuff but this is good lol

Mushoku Tensei music is good. The way they arrange the strings and wind instruments is very clean. It's like you can feel the air when listening to the album.

I'll take the opportunity to pitch in an album from another Japanese band. ZUTOMAYO's 1st album Hisohiso Banashi has been my go-to for around 2 months now. The way they arrange the instruments is absolute fire and the vocals compliment it very nicely.

I always wished I started with HD6xx series to see what the fuss is about and later upgrade to HD800S. Now I'm not sure if going back to try them after listening to HD800S is worth it.

BTW - The HD800S usually go on sale for around 1,200 - 1,300, so keep your eyes out!

Wow, you have a great setup, almost all my dream headphones, except maybe some HE1kV2 would better suit Arya place, but still excellent. What use cases you have for your LCD-XC? Do you need that passive noise isolation? Or you are using them in the same settings as your open-back headphones?

Also interested, what IEMs you heard before getting Monarch MkII?

Made in Abyss’ OST is one of my go to recommendations for people trying out my 800s. It’s also my go to anime for people looking for cutesy stories of a couple kids going on a charming adventure.

I love my Aryas to bits, Haven't heard the HE1000V2, but I'm pretty content with the Arya SE. As for the LCD-XC, I purchased it to complement my open back aryas, And yes, I use them for the passive noise isolation. I love their sound signature, but I recently sold them as they were just too heavy for me and I preferred my Aryas for listening to music.

Before the Monarch MKII, I have tried the Arias, 7hz Dioko, and Blessing 2 Dusk. Love the sound signature of the Monarch, but funnily enough, I also sold the Monarchs recently as well. I tried for a while to find the right tips to fit the monarchs in my ear, and using Sedna eartips got me really close, but still after an hour or two, my ears would not be very comfortable. So yeah, unfortunately found the nozzles were just too big to fit in my ears and decided to let them go.

Hah, well it is normal flow in this hobby, I haven't owned any audio gear more than 6 months, maybe my Variations will break this record.

So what IEM are you using now, after selling Monarch? Or maybe looking for something to buy?

Also thanks for your input about LCD-XC, I decided that this would be my 'end game' closed back if I wanted one, but 670g of weight is indeed disappointing. I didn't feel at all my 410g Ananda on my head, this ear-shaped HiFimans are very comfortable with my head, 450g Elex was already heavy on my head, and then I understood that comfort for headphones are important.

Had you EQ your LCD-XC to Harman? How it compares with/without EQ to the Arya based purely on technical department (details, soundstage, imaging, separation) and who has better vocals/bass? As I have read, Arya are more technical than LCD-X, so it's closed version should lose even a bit more due to artificial soundstage due to closed back design?

SaulR26 t1_j208tp9 wrote

I recently ordered the Truthear Hexa, so I will just be using those for now. I realized I don't use IEMs nearly as much as my headphones and It doesn't really make sense for me to spend several hundreds of dollars on top tier IEMs, so at least for now I'll be going for some cheaper IEMs.

for the most part, I actually enjoyed the XC tuning out of the box and didn't bother with tuning all that much, but I did give it a bit more sub bass with my lokius. As for how it compares, for details, I would say that the Arya is the more capable headphone. The Arya is more detailed, has taller soundstage (width is more or less the same), more accurate imaging and separation. This is not to say the LCD-XC is bad, I preferred the XC when it came to vocal heavy tracks as they provided more intimacy and a clearer center image. I also preferred their performance with heavy bass tracks. It's a guilty pleasure of mine and I love a lot of rumbly and punchy bass sometimes, my Aryas are pretty good at providing good rumble and punch, but they don't exactly give the same sensation that the XC can as it is a closed back. Overall though, I prefer the Aryas and I do think they are the better headphone.

Great, thank you for your response. I'm only 1 year in this hobby and from day 1 I was thinking about Arya, due to Joshua Valour influence, because he was the first reviewer, that I started to watch and in that time he was loving AryaV2 and I am still dreaming about the day, when I will grab a pair for myself and will sunk into audio nirvana

Enjoy your Arya! For most people they are end game material
