Cold plunging? As in jumping into 20 degree water regularly on purpose?

Polar plunge has existed for at least 70 years but okay

I don't think they meant that he invented it or anything. Just that it's currently popular with the Bro Jogan set.

We did ice baths in D1 high school sports 20+ years ago -- after grueling football two-a-days, between back-to-back track events, etc. Long before Roe Jogan's shiny thumb of a head became so popular. But not at night... in the ocean... alone...

The cold immersion eases inflammation and improves muscle recovery. Hop into a sauna / hot-tub / hot shower right after and your joints & muscles feel like jello (in a good way). It's like an all-natural recovery cheat code.

Reddit doesn't know dick about fitness / sports though. Anything remotely physical is bro-ism.

I’m assuming you did it in a therapeutic setting with a sauna handy. Not the ocean. At night.

Yeah no argument there. Anybody who's done it before knows it can be dangerous. I have only ever done it in the ocean or lakes but never alone.

That’s a new years day thing. This guy was doing it regularly. I’ve seen the really cold plunge pools at a few spas.

As far as I know polar plunge (which idk if it's a trademarked name or anything) isn't strictly for new years but I guess it's not the same thing as what this guy was doing if you want to take get into it. When I did it was usually first thing in the morning

Not a doctor or a therapist, but my psychiatrist and therapist recommended I do some cold exposure to help with anxiety and panic attacks and it does help. I usually try to just step outside or do an ice bath. It apparently slows your heart rate and breathing and calms the system that causes your body to go into fight or flight during panic attacks.

And in the case of that it should be something done safely, not alone at night in freezing temps

Completely agree - but wanted to share that it was not just a hoe Rogan trend. I feel horrible for the victim but it should be done safely not alone in the ocean at night. :(

Cold showers wouldn't work for that? You have to use open water?

FWIW, his wife ( who knows if she's correct) said "He cold plunged at night, alone, in 23 degree weather and the water was even colder. "

I read an article about why cold swimming is so dangerous and one of the reasons is cold water shock. Which I had never heard of. But it makes sense, it seems like it would be a tremendous stress on your body.

The pond in my hometown is low key infamous for this. It's got cold springs, so even strong swimmers can get in trouble. You can get cramped up when you get a cold shock like that.
