So this is probably a question that’s been brought up before but since it is the day before Halloween, in any order you want, what are your top five horror movies?

For me:

-Cabin in the Woods (2011)

-Escape Room (2019)

-Happy Death Day (2017)

-The Shining (1980)

-Evil Dead (2013)

6-10 would be:

-Halloween (1978)

-Nightmare on elm street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

-The Thing (1982)

-Alien (1979)

-Jaws (1975)

Honorable mentions would be:

-47 Meters Down (2017)

-Final Destination (2000)

-Us (2019)

Thanks! Just curious, what are yours?

1

iamstephano t1_iufhsjl wrote

Same as yours except instead of Carnival of Souls and Videodrome I put Rosemary's Baby and Scream. It was completely off the top of my head though, I think it would be impossible for me to make a genuine top 5 of all time.

Also a good choice. I love both of them but alien was the first proper horror/sci fi movie I ever saw and it holds a special place in my heart because of that.

3

Murderous_Waffle t1_iucyteo wrote

I didn't really grow up around Alien when it first came out. So it wasn't my first horror experience.

But I love your other horror picks. Hush was one of my first true horror flicks. Now I watch everything that Mike Flanagan puts out. I used to avoid horror like the plague. Then I started to broaden my horizons. There are still classics that I have not seen.

A quiet place is a favorite of mine as well.

I've never been in love with the 28 days or 28 weeks later films. I'll have to rewatch them since I've only seen them once or so.

** I take that back It Follows is probably one of the first Horror films that and the Babadook comes to mind. Both great movies.

1

lillykat25 t1_iuh1hae wrote

I only watched Hush really recently. I decided to check out The Haunting of Hill House because I heard it was really good and I loved it, so now I’m working my way through Mike Flanagan’s filmography.

The Shining is probably my favourite but I don't find it as scary as I do the OG Texas Chainsaw, so that would be my scariest. There's so many honourable mentions too, The Wicker Man (1973 version) being one, Hereditary, purely for that final 20 minutes or so & much more. Also saw Barbarian last night, was pretty decent, I'd recommend.

It's silly, but the trend to call House 'Hausu' is pet peeve of mine. It's just 'House', it was released with an English title. In addition to the actual English there was a katakana supratitle but that's just a phonetic translation for Japanese pronunciation of English words and it's silly to translate back as 'hausu' unless you are actually speaking Japanese, it's like a stupid game of pronunciation telephone. Years ago when it was re-released some people started marketing it as 'hausu' and it's been nonsense ever since. It reeks of people who don't know Japanese trying to be "authentic" with absolutely no knowledge of why they are doing so. Like the film-nerd equivalent of getting a Kanji tattoo that they heard means 'power' or whatever and any native speaker has to hold back their laughter or confusion.

I still remember seeing the trailer for the first time in a theater, ahead of some movie I don't remember. At the end of it when the title card was shown and the trailer narrator said those words there was quite a reaction from the crowd. It wasn't quite laughing; it was more like a simultaneous laugh of astonishment, holy-fuck-I-have-to-see-this reaction. I think people were genuinely impressed just by the balls of the idea.

I know the movie had script challenges and it has some problems but man is this movie still a blast. I was 31 when it came out, and had grown up on a steady diet of horror and slasher flicks. I literally grew up with Jason and Freddy, so I was all in. I was not disappointed.

A lot of posters here have awful taste.
