I don't remember who told me to watch this but I have not laughed out loud crying and choking for a long time. Nicholas Cage is perfection in this movie, and Pedro Pascal is his perfect sidekick. Some of these scenes had me and my husband howling with laughter! Cannot recommend this enough. Go watch it now.

Pedro was the MVP in this one, all of my biggest laughs came from his material.

Then the "fake laugh" shortly after. The whole drug scene was gold.

Hmm.

It's currently on Amazon Prime for no extra cost. I've ignored it this past two weeks it's been there, but maybe I oughtta give it a go.

Itโ€™s absolutely not a good movie, but Pedro is at least good in it.

I really felt like pedro pascal was having SO much fun acting like a giant, corny, goofball of a stereotypical 60s batman villain.

Even the worst movie (and 1984 is trash) can have great individual things about it and pascal was a joy on screen every time.

Why are people mentioning Paddington? Is it a plot point or something?

28

DripDropWetWet t1_j2bp1oi wrote

Yes, Cage is into deep cut classics and when he meets Pascal they end up bonding over it and it gets mentioned throughout.

Hah! OK that's pretty funny. I've been meaning to check this out.

Ironically they're both in that category where people feel like they should watch them but they just don't. When they do they never regret it.

3

Rare-North t1_j2dtd51 wrote

It's a great family movie. Legitimately good vs. commercialized stuff like Minions. Second one has Wes Anderson vibes from what I recall.

I had a general idea of what the movie was about and was somewhat wary given how...amenable...he has been to taking a wide variety of scripts. But damn that was so spot on meta and hilarious.

noronto t1_j2do76m wrote

I will never forgive this movie for making me watch Paddington 2. Why did they not mention Paddington 1? How do they expect somebody who willingly watches a Nic Cage movie to understand the plot twists and science stuffs of the Paddington series? Do you even know how high I was, Nic Cage? That shit is real confusing.

Nicolas Cage unleashed himself in this fantastic meta-comedy buddy love story action film, a movie that starts out with a quirky weird and off-center version of the real Cage and then Pedro Pascal's scene-stealing superfan enters the picture and what was already a fun and goofy comedy explodes as two incredible actors bounce off each in what could best be described as a tennis match of theย gods.

Watch the almost perfect 1 first to enhance the payoff in the perfect 2.

There are a few perfect movies and Paddington 1 and 2 are in that list.

Just to balance this, I watched Paddington 2 as a result of this movie, and I really didn't enjoy it at all. I definitely seem to be in the minority, but it was a basic generic kids movie, in my opinion. Sorry everyone. I wanted to love it!

The LSD scene is probably the most accurate depiction of what LSD is actually like that Iโ€™ve ever seen in a movie, besides maybe Men Who Stare at Goats. Itโ€™s not depicted as some over the top insane drug that makes you go crazy, but rather as two grow men who have a good time at first and let their imaginations get carried away.

I didnt think the movie was funny at all. I didnt think it was a terrible movie, i thought it was good. But i dont think it was remotely funny. I cant even remember one gag. I remember chuckling once or twice but thats it. It was a lot more serious than i thought it was going to be.

TheJoliestEgg t1_j2c3wrj wrote

Yes thank you. I had high expectations for this film, but I didnโ€™t finish it. Itโ€™s fine, itโ€™s acceptable, and amusing. Not hilarious. Unless all the funny parts were in the last twenty minutes.

−1

leopard_tights t1_j2c4lm5 wrote

It wasn't funny, meta or clever really. Ah yes at one point he kisses himself. That's the whole extent of the craziness. The rest is a really really bad comedy/action movie.

I mean you gotta ask yourself why even do the movie in the first place to do so little with it. It's like they started with the correct mindset but they just didn't have the talent to write it and ended with the most mid movie imaginable.

My dude. The Rock is one of the greatest action films of all time. You started to dislike Cage during peak Cage?

15

BunnyReturns_ t1_j2dadg6 wrote

He has a lot of fun/good films ranging from high budget to indie. The most important part is basically understanding what you get with Cage.

Someone who will go absolutely balls to the wall with 100% commitment no matter how shit/weird the story/character is. He's quite honestly a really good actor when paired with a serious script and a good director and he can make shit movies really funny if you don't expect anything else.

Pig is a serious and really good movie showing that Cage is a legit actor

Color out of space is weird Cage in all of his glory

The way of appreciating Cage is embracing that he can be both a great actor, really fucking weird and that he will commit no matter what.

He can make a indie/b-movie and he can break a high budget movie
