Hello. I’ve lived in NC and Florida all my life and have a CCW from both states. I’ve always been used to having reciprocity when traveling to close-by states as the south is definitely more gun friendly than the northern states.

I love NC but want to try somewhere new and NH has always peeked my interest as it checks pretty much every box but I’ve noticed that NH is pretty much surrounded by non gun-friendly states.

Because NH is much smaller compared to NC and FL I see that it’s pretty common to travel to the other New England states like Massachusetts, Rhode island, Connecticut etc.

How do gun owners in NH go about or feel about not being able to carry in many surrounding states? Concealed carry is pretty important to me personally.

Thank you!

That's what I would do as well, but you came off as unnecessarily overaggressive.

Yeah, cuz people who open carry don't come off as overly aggressive 100% of the time.

Well, you'll note the OP is discussing concealed carry.

You should probably stay in North Carolina. Affordable housing, no heating bills, better barbecue, and you can play cowboy year around since it doesnt snow. On top of all this the only Waffle House north of the Mason-Dixon is in Scranton PA, a 5 hours drive. Can't stop there to berate the waitress after church, unless you're really motivated. Bless your heart.

If in NH the heat goes out, or god forbid you have to walk outside, just put on more clothes or exert yourself a bit more. In the Southeast, if the A/C goes out, or god forbid you have to walk outside ... there's only so many clothes you can take off.

Never heard this complaint from those who I know with conceal carry permits. They either go about their business as normal taking the risk, don't visit these places or simply do the unthinkable, they don't carry.

Some in this thread let a conceal carry permit dictate their life? JFC.

Right!? The persons comment about not going to VT because they have a magazine capacity. Imagine being that scared of…..VERMONT that you feel that standard mag capacity is a requirement. Sounds like some of these folks need more training from their “well regulated militia” that’s cited in their favorite amendment.

Massive-Instance-579 t1_iu8pwa6 wrote

So I was born and raised in NH and now live in MA after finishing my time in the Army. Most people’s idea of MA gun laws are totally false. I own more guns now than I did when I lived in NH, and have full license to carry them. You CAN get a MA LTC if you live in NH, but it costs you $100 a year and you have to attend the safety class (if you’re a responsible/experienced gun owner it’s a breeze.).

That being said, there are a lot of factors that I would look at before moving that’ll impact you a lot more than your ability to carry a firearm in the surrounding states. High cost of living, low job opportunity depending on your career path, and harsh winters are something folks from the South find as a bit of a culture shock. Let me know if you have other questions.

$100 application fee, and they can deny you for ANY reason they deem. Oh, and they keep your $100...

pahnzoh t1_iu8r8g5 wrote

Except you can't own a magazine more than 10 rounds manufactured after 1994, and tons of other restrictions.

The fact that MA voters want to prosecute and imprison their neighbors for exercising a constitutional right is enough for me not to want to live anywhere near those people.

2

Massive-Instance-579 t1_iu8rfep wrote

As a MA resident with an unrestricted LTC? Also, not true. They do a solid job of covering all of the law in the safety classes and as long as you get approval then it’s basically the same as living in NH.

Out of state would depend on if they restricted you or not.

3

pahnzoh t1_iu8rybe wrote

Yes. You can have a LTC or even a machine gun license and the 10 round magazine limit applies.

Don't trust whatever the safety person told you. The AG will absolutely prosecute you for a felony in MA for having a 11+ rd magazine manufactured after 1994.

You can't buy normal guns there. You can't buy an AR15. You have to buy an M16 equivalent semi-auto lower manufactured prior to 1994 and build it out from there to avoid the state AWB.

1

SheeEttin t1_iu9ulio wrote

You can buy and build ARs just fine. I live in MA right now and I have one.

4

pahnzoh t1_iuavja5 wrote

Well it's more complicated than either of us have stated. It depends on the FFL and whether you want to risk prosecution from Maura's interpretation of the state AWB.

Hopefully SCOTUS will kick these laws to the ground once and for all soon.

Doza13 t1_iudxbzl wrote

Yeah MA actually read the part that said "well regulated".

0

pahnzoh t1_iue3j30 wrote

That doesn't mean what you think it means. Regulated in 1791 meant component shooter.

Plus I'm not a statist bootlicker so I don't believe my rights come from a contract some guys signed 200 years ago.

Doza13 t1_iueeuxq wrote

The entire second amendment was designed in part by slave holders to be able to maintain the freedom to control their slaves. To be able to quickly crush any sort of slave rebellion and to be able to defend the institution of slavery. Not just to combat a tyrannical government.

Nothing in there about arms for self defense, only reference is for militia purposes. Nothing in Madison's notes either.

Textualism would require a return to muskets.

I tend to chuckle whenever I see someone screeching about their rights when they're in trouble in a state which is known to trample on said rights. The folks that live there and screech about their denied rights are the worst-they are literally financing the people who have removed those rights with their tax money.

You can go to Maine and Vermont no problem. And there are some nice things there. If you want to go to MA or NY just leave the gun at home. There is no need for it in Boston or NYC. In fact if people in those cities see you have a gun on you expect to have a conversation with police that results in your weekend plans getting ruined.

But yeah NH loves guns and you’ll fit right in in some of the more rural areas

K3CAN t1_iu8iwix wrote

I used to carry multiple licenses, but NH and Maine both went constitutional a few years back, and I think VTs been that way for a while now.

That lets you travel pretty freely without any license at all, everywhere the light touches. What about that shadowy place to the south? That's beyond our borders. You must never go there, Simba.

Honestly, you'll get used to it and either avoid Mass altogether (a great idea for various reasons), or just plan ahead to leave everything at home when you need to travel there. They do finally allow pepper spray now, though, so at least have some sort of defensive option.

Possession of a handgun illegally in MA is mandatory’s one year in jail. You can transport your weapon through MA if you legally possess it in the state you left and the state your going to. Weapon and ammo must be separate and secured in a locked container

Get a nonresident ltc for mass. In vt the capacity law is purchase only not possession. Unless you have relatives or some other specific reason to go to CT, RI, or NY you shouldn’t ever have to go anywhere you can’t carry.

pahnzoh t1_iu8t0oc wrote

Then you have to carry a gun with only a 10 rd magazine, go through their entire BS process, and renew it every single year. It's designed for people not to do it.

Doza13 t1_iue00t4 wrote

What's the obsession with needing to carry a gun everywhere? I understand the concept of "need" vs. "freedom to". But some of you are just odd "I won't go to MA because I can't take my gun".

Is this a fear or some attempt at a political statement?

wickedhip t1_iug22bf wrote

This is easily the safest area of the country, I have a feeling once you’re in the area you’ll realize there’s no real need to carry.

You are fine in Maine and VT(watch those magazine sizes) but going south you are screwed. I live on the border and locals get used to it and it has to be something you plan as part of your day. Where I am you could drive down a road and cross the border and not even know it

It is possible to get ccw licenses in MA as well as CT, the process is costly and time consuming. You gotta take the NRA saftey class, get finger printed, and wait through wait times. Even if you get it, your gonna have to get special low capacity mags for anything that holds more than 10 rounds from the factory, you can't just have a standard cap mag loaded with 10, that would be jail time.

DeerFlyHater t1_iu8jcor wrote

Easiest answer to to not travel to those states. They don't deserve my business for supporting such bullshit.

Maine is fair game though.

As already mentioned check the cost of living. You'll find housing costs are significantly higher than what you see in much of NC-not counting places like Cary. The cost for heat would be another sticker shock item for you.

Not exactly “easy” to get a non resident LTC in ma. I was a mass resident with an LTC, moved to NH, took me 3.5 years to get my non resident for ma and had to jump through a hassle of hoops. Have to renew it annually instead of 5 years, pay again. They make it so you won’t do it.

Moved back to ma, LTC was reinstated no issues. Dumb, but for whatever reason as a non resident they weren’t excited to give it to me

8

finalyst19 t1_iu9hh15 wrote

Why would it take you 3.5 years? Did you wait 3 years to apply?

3

External_Dimension71 t1_iu9lyi8 wrote

Back when I did it you needed an in person meeting in Chelsea. And I had to wait when I scheduled that meeting, which they cancelled and rescheduled twice, and gave me the run around till I was finally able to go. After 2017 they’ve made it more available by mail, now you only need to go once every 6 years but still reapply annually but before that. It was garbage.

8

finalyst19 t1_iu9mss3 wrote

Interesting, I’ve heard it’s better than it used to be. For me I applied in March 2021, interviewed in July, received it in December 2021. They seemed to misplace it and I had to call them every week or two in the fall to keep the process moving.

The nice thing about it is even if you never renew it you get lifetime protection from being charged with a crime for carrying without a license. Instead you get a civil offense and hefty fine for carrying with an expired license. Beats prison.
