I live on Greene St, but walk down William all the time. It's a nice area, really quiet, definitely wouldn't hesitate to live there.

Nice, quiet, isolated. Worst thing is the occasional train noise, if that bothers you.

Wooster Square is as safe as Park Slope circa 2000. It's really a beautiful neighborhood near everything you need - something that can be said for few urban areas in the US.

William Street is definitely a hidden gem. My wife and I have lived in New Haven for 5+ years and love it here. Close enough to everything downtown but still has a neighborhood feel, parking, & a reasonable price. It’s just as safe as all the other areas you’re probably looking at too. The biggest issue we’ve had on this street is package thieves, so I would ensure the place you move to has a spot for your packages to be safe.

William St. is safe. I know lots of people who’ve lived on that street through the years, and I looked at buying a house there about 10 years ago. Typical crime is property theft - stolen bikes, packages, occasionally cars. In other words, same types of crime that occurs in most of the recommended neighborhoods. It’s near the train tracks, not sure how often the train goes by.
You can sign up for emails from the Downtown / Wooster Square Community Management Team to keep up with local issues and crime stats.

Honestly everyone who lives on lyon is great but i had a phone mugging happen there when walking at night. Someone walked over from grand. William is a bit further removed.

I live on Lyon and I'm a single female. During the day, it's super safe. At night - especially when I'm walking home from downtown, I am extremely cognizant of my surroundings. I've never had anything sketchy happen to me, but I know there were some muggings years ago (A friend of a friend was walking home after working at a restaurant at night and was jumped).
Once during a lunch break in the middle of winter, I was sitting the Wooster park by myself and a random man started walking towards me, saying something that I couldn't quite make out. He was twice my size and with no one around, I got nervous and walked away. No matter what, as women, we have to always be super careful.

You’ll be fine, the majority of issues in that area are overdoes, stolen packages and/or people going through cars. Having said that, Grand Ave gets rough real quick.
