Idk, I found him like that. He seems fine. I think that is their defense mechanism.

Don't release it until you are 100% sure it's native. I'd call animal control or a vet...unless you know a snake expert...

Too late for that. I did google native snakes and to me it looked like a Garter Snake.

Looks like it may be a northern brown snake..
ImaginaryRoads t1_iuxvkar wrote
After releasing it, the more important question is "why was it in your laundry in the first place"? Do you have mice? If you have mice, it's likely the snake came in to eat the mice.

Pennsylvania.
structuremonkey t1_iuy0fqy wrote
Yikes...doesn't look like a garter to me. They are usually dark greenish and have a yellow stripe down the length of their back.
I hope your laundry was somewhat accessible from outside so a "native" just happened to slither in...if so letting it go outside was the best choice...unless it was a lost pet.
Given the right conditions it doesn't take long for invasive species to take hold...look at south Florida with pythons and iguanas.. and PA / NJ with the dammed spotted lantern flies...among hundreds of other invaders...

Christ, y’all are soft. This is a completely harmless Brown Snake. Just carry it to the nearest shrub and leave him to do snake things.
Poor little ramen noodle couldn’t hurt you even if he wanted to, the only snakes around here that are even remotely dangerous are copperheads and timber rattlers.

If it did crawl in from outside, I'd guess it's a northern brown snake....doesn't look like any garter I've ever seen...but I'm no zoologist, just a turtle rescue guy...

"What harm can come of this little brown spider, that is so afraid of you that likes to be recluse?" /s
People are fully right in being overcautious with snakes. Wrong identification of a snake can kill a person much more likely than wrong identification of a spider.

Any wooded area should be fine. Such critters like to hide under leaves and eat small fuzzy woodland creatures.
Semi related: I always relocate garden groundhogs to golf courses. Not only do I think it's a more posh neighborhood, it makes me think of Caddyshack and amuses me greatly.

mattemer t1_iv0dmsb wrote
Yeah definitely not a garter. The coloring could work but the pattern and lack of stripe aren't a garter. Their color does vary a lot. I think just a brown snake.

Nice, not a snake person myself but I appreciate unusual pets. I had rats a while back, adorable little critters that most people think are gross or scary, so I get it.

Rats are cool too. They are adorable, especially as babies. That is the only hard part about owning snakes. First time I fed my python I cried.
Slavic_Dusa OP t1_iv19504 wrote
Yes. That is true, but not for this little guy. I don't think he can eat anything bigger than small bug. Maybe when he reaches full maturity.

They can unhinge their jaw because their jaws are not connected together. The Jacobsen's Organ is where they can "analyze" scent particles picked up by flicking their tongues.

He could most likely manage pinkies. They can usually eat anything roughly the same size as their largest diameter.
That said, he may be a lost or escaped pet.
