EDIT: THE ICE STORM WAS WEDNESDAY EVENING,

followed by wind gusts of 45mph Thursday evening, and they're promising 95% back online by Sunday evening.

EDIT EDIT: Updated article here:

https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/02/24/michigan-power-outages-utilities/69939074007/

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Here is a link to a "live" outage map by DTE, one of the biggest providers:

https://outagemap.dteenergy.com/?c=VisibilityConfig&o=ViewByZIP

ZIP map has the most detail.

Weather is currently below freezing for the third night, at 22°F.

Check r/detroit for anecdotal accounts.

Love from the metro D. <3

I lived there for a year and a few summers ago I swear we lost power everytime there was a thunderstorm in the Detroit area. I had to file a couple different times for loss of food. It was pretty ridiculous after awhile. I hope y'all are staying warm.

t1_j9zzbt1 wrote

Yeah I lost power a couple of times last summer. Once for 4 days. I actually think summer is worse without power. Easier to get warmer than cooler in my opinion.

State wide map here:

down to 474k out as of 9AM.

t1_j9zgiog wrote

Huh. DTE’s outage map show fewer than 100k. Plus, it shows my neighborhood as being off and we never lost power so it seems like their map is an overestimate. (Except for flickering.)

Edit: never mind. DTE says 50k+ but when I click on it, it says 250k. 😖

> outage map by DTE

Oh thank fuck I dont have them as my power provider

t1_j9y6tnm wrote

The real concern here is the number of elderly affected. DTE should be covering much more than just food loss. Imagine being 90 and trying to maintain a generator and a fire just to not freeze to death in your sleep.

That’s my neighbor. I let her plug into my generator for a heater. Hopefully today we get power.

t1_j9zk1ie wrote

It's cold. My neighbors are at a hotel, we've just got a generator going with a space heater. 100% getting a switch wired in so I can run my whole panel on that thing, because this keeps happening

t1_j9zlz1f wrote

My power is out and supposedly coming back Sunday night.

Im able to stay at my partners parents house so I don’t freeze, but I can’t get any of my work done and am losing a ton of food.

It is very stressful

18

t1_j9zmslc wrote

Why is the food at risk? With how cold it is outside your house should be colder than the fridge soon.

Sarcasm... Kinda

t1_j9znlti wrote

I bulk freeze a lot of food, and it’s not staying below freezing most of the day where I am.

6

t1_j9zo4cs wrote

Well hopefully if it's fully frozen and you aren't opening the freezer some of it may still be fine. Things like meat with high thermal capacitance can stay cold fairly long on their own if the freezer is appropriately insulated. Best of luck.

I hope they get power back soon. And I just have to say, every time I think I'm sick and tired of living in the Pacific Northwest, I read about all the natural disasters, power outages, etc that happen pretty much everywhere else in the country but here, and I feel just a bit more comfortable staying here.

t1_j9zmf9p wrote

Fuck, you're right. I was only four or five years old and living in California when Mount Saint Helens blew so it's a bit far back in my memory; but I know Rainier is potentially due to go at any time. I probably just totally jinxed the PNW. 😂 Can I do a take back? LOL

t1_j9ylzwa wrote

I'm there. Most of the state is just fine.

The majority of outages are along the southern 1/4 of the state.

In Lansing the ice was melted before the wind started, so nothing happened. Grand Rapids was mostly snow.

9

t1_ja0hrjr wrote

The southern quarter of the state just happens to be where the people live, hence the article. Anywhere else in Michigan no one would give a shit.

t1_ja0vj63 wrote

Yeah, this is what happens when you plan your communities on open farmland, and then, after 70 years of poor forestry management practices, they turn into urban forests. I know everyone shits on the utility, but tree damage is the main cause of downed power lines here.

9

t1_ja2vul9 wrote

Yeah, the areas with the most power loss are also the areas where nobody does proper tree trimming or maintenance.

2

t1_j9xo1cs wrote

Yeah, it was pretty crazy. I was stuck in a traffic jam today that was caused just by the fact that multiple lights were out in a highly populated area. I wasn't affected, thankfully, but some of my family members were

6

t1_j9zuht9 wrote

Dude and nobody over here knows how to deal with a traffic light that’s out. Almost got hit 2 separate times on my way up to lake Orion at the lights

3

t1_j9yeiit wrote

My power thankfully came back after 18 hours, but since more than 10% of customers lost power this is a "catastrophic event" so I'm not eligible for the paltry $25 disruption credit.

I have 5 aquariums so I am thankful it came back on before the ambient temperature got too low. I'll have to buy a small generator to run the 750w of heaters for the next "catastrophic event" in 3-6 months.

t1_j9ylhzr wrote

My power went out twice but not for very long. Back up generator i put in last year worked perfectly. All of the trees had about a quarter inch of ice on them.

I’m in SW MI. Still a lot out over here. 128,000 homes. Over 500 homes (that is a lot in the country) out within a couple miles of mine with no cause assessed or crews assigned and 2/27 as the estimated restoration date.

Got power back on friday, lost it again Saturday afternoon, still freezing in the dark.

This sucks.

3

t1_ja0mu2t wrote

How is this even possible. Get -40 here and our power grid is just fine

2

t1_ja0tjhx wrote

Cause temperature isn’t the only factor. I’m lucky in that my area is with power, but the winter storm was a mix of high winds and fluctuations in temperature around 32 degrees Fahrenheit. So rain was coming down, turning into ice, and a few hours later it would freeze again just to melt later on. I’ve lived here for seven years and this was one of the worst one’s I’ve seen

t1_ja43ks6 wrote

I'm just across the river in Windsor and we had lots of outages, too. Enwin was on the ball, though. Power was back for most people in a matter of hours. Different story in the county - Hydro One is never on the ball.

Where the fuck did that come from? Michigan already has a region. The Great Lakes region.

Lol how is that PC? It's a literal geographic description based on the most distinctive feature of the region

12

Uh it’s politically correct because it’s neutral and agreed by the people that live in the surrounding states? It is literally the term that is used. Like wtf is going on with people in this sub?

The Texas storm wasn't once in a blue moon. We had two previous freezes in the last 20 years that took down the power with state funded reports detailing the risk and what had to be done. The state did nothing because it would cost the gas companies a little money.

And then the freeze happens and half the natural gas wells froze and and those companies who failed us during the freeze lost so much money they went out of business made as much profit in one week as they normally do in two years.

So no, Reddit isn't just picking on Texas. My power went out for days and my home got down into the 40s. There is nothing quite like having to check each morning to see if my elderly parents were one of the 250 that died. And all this happened while we have been put on a payment plan to pay the profits to the companies that failed to do their job. The criticism is extremely well justified.

7

t1_j9z3kfk wrote

That would be the case if reddit didn't just do the same thing last month when Texas lost power due to ice on trees. There were people in the comments claiming it happens up north but it's always on layer that day or rarely the next day.

4

t1_j9yl3cj wrote

It is well justified. Texas deserved to be shitted on for what happened.

But so does Cali for their constant wildfire failures. So does NY for their constant power outages from freezes. So do plenty of other states for their shitty failures. but Reddit will ALWAYS heavily have one sided biased front page upvoted issues.
