Judging by the picture, his car made it somewhat far into the temple after crashing through the wooden doors. He not only hit the gas while in reverse, but he also failed to stop right away. They should check his sobriety and/or his competency to drive.

Panic. People do some really dumb shit when they panic. He/she probably hit something then froze up panicking hitting the gas instead of the breaks. Happens all the time.

This is what I love about Reddit. Everything of note and everything not of note, you can read about in Reddit. Thanks for the posts and keep on posting 😃

Japan you go to jail for like a year for drunk driving…. Most other substances that can impair are illegal to buy or sell.

That being said, he is probably 1102 years old and installed the toilet himself… 😉

On base in Japan a soldiers wife from the states got in her car and put it in drive, jumped the 3’ wide 6” high concrete barrier, and landed front tire on the hood of the car parked across from her.

On the bright side, it will now become the newest toilet at Kyoto temple.

It was a communal toilet that was basically a row of stones with holes in them. Its an incredible loss but I think the cultural legacy of Japan might yet survive this tragedy.

People also don’t know how cars and other mechanical devices work…. For example they would allow a car to “run away with them” because they don’t know that jamming it in neutral or switching off the ignition would stop it…

Usually this happens when people mix up up the pedals. He most likely thought he was pressing the brake and when the car failed to stop he mashed it. Unfortunately, he was on the gas.

My guess is that he was probably an older person, there has been a rash of older people in Japan crashing their cars years now. Guessing he may not have a lot of feeling in his feet and legs and probably just didn't know the difference.

These were neat little cars and they were popular, too. Most people in Japan will trade a car in once it gets about 10 years old but people seem to hang onto these despite the fact they are over 20 now.

Back in the day I thought the Wil VS was cooler looking, but when I look at the pictures now it hasn't aged as well. Wiki

It could have been a lot worse. A few years ago when I was living there and elderly driver got up on the sidewalk and struck several kids walking home from school. Elderly driving is a serious issue there, especially as the entire population starts to skew older and older because of the low birth rates.
