This is what happens when things aren't investigated and people aren't formally charged/convicted. Letting peole resign and then forgetting about the problem isn't a solution to police misconduct.

No idea why this got downvoted, the article just seemed to casually stroll past that fact. I'm in no way condoning the cop's actions, whether she gave it to him willingly or not.

This is a factor in so much more than just this issue. For example, on basically any regulatory violation, large companies tend to comply better than smaller ones, but it's much easier to go after McDonald's or Wal-Mart than after the local mom & pops or even the mid-tier companies, and when you do go after the big guys, as you said, there's more money (and better press).

That really doesn't pan out though. There are abuse scandals in pretty much every organization where adults have power over children. All sorts of religious organizations, religious and secular schools, the Boy Scouts, numerous little league sports teams have all had child abuse scandals.

When a celibate priest decides they can't uphold their vow, they don't automatically turn to abusing children, they end up with adults. There are plenty of stories of priests either dating someone secretly, or visiting sex workers. Sometimes, they quit entirely and get married rather than continue as a priest.

Whether or not celibacy for priests is a good idea can be debated, but abstaining from sex for long periods of time does not turn you into a pedophile.

1

[deleted] t1_iybvn3a wrote

True. Whenever you hear about a cult for instance, 8/10 times not only the leader abuses the adults in the sect but then somehow they all end up abusing the children too. I don’t think they are conventional pedophiles, I think it’s the narcissism that makes them believe they are entitled to whatever they want because they are god on earth or some shit. In the cas e of the catholic priests, they just seemed to have kids around in church activities and they are easier to manipulate and scare into silence than adults. I think it’s more of a “crime of opportunity” but of course not all the cases are the same.

You pretty much 100% agreed with me. Smaller companies have a harder time complying with regulations, while big guys don't. This is sometimes a good thing (the local McDonald's is likely cleaner than the local dive), but is often just a symptom of regulatory capture.

Pope still hasn’t released records of who attended (was forced into) residential schools in Canada, even after we found over a thousand dead kids (probably more dead from disease than from direct abuse, but why was this a surprise/not officially recorded, and why did they put kids in close, unsanitary conditions without enough food?).

Worse, the articles about it mostly describe someone asking for it then talk about how wonderfully gracious the pope was during the meeting and never mention that he didn’t give over the records - leaving the impression that he did.
