Five hours is not enough to do anything really

Get drunk at the airport bar.

I’d just go to the lounge.

A 5 hour layover really means like 2:30. You’ll pay like 12 bucks each way for air train and subway just to go like 3 stops, grab a sandwich, sit down, and then go back.

Eh, just stay at the lounge and enjoy the free stuff. Just don’t go overboard in the booze or you might wind up as one of those disorderly passengers filmed on a flight trying to fight half the plane. Or do. It’s a free country I can’t tell you what to do

100% not worth it to leave JFK. If you have the AMEX platinum and flying out of terminal 4, highly recommend the centurion lounge.

Virgin lounge > Centurion if they actually let you in with the card. They restrict access at busy times.

Unfortunately I don't think that's enough time to leave the airport. It's about an hour from JFK to Manhattan, so leaving enough time to responsibly make sure you're back at the airport for an international flight would leave very, very little time to do anything.

I guess you could go somewhere closer to the airport, like Rockaway Beach, but this time of year, when it's cold and dark by 5 p.m., that doesn't sound very appealing.

Book a room at the TWA Hotel for a few hours. It’s really cool.

This. They have short stays of 4 hours. You can shower up, hit the roof top heated pool and watch the planes land (I thought I wouldn’t like it but it was cool). Even if you don’t want to shell out cash you can just check out the landmarked building. It’s like stepping back to 1962. They did a good job restoring it to look like it did when they built it. Flew LAX to JFK before layover and did some shopping. Centurion is pretty clean!

I work near JFK and there isn't shit to do in that area. You're better off hanging out in the lounge.
