Sirens wailing right now, this isn't good. It smells really weird too (I'm around Ave C).

Omg I’m uptown and Ny 1 doesn’t even have anything on it. What’s happening?

The app Citizen tells me Shotshooter Shotspotter technology has been activated. But those were no shots, they were explosions - maybe fireworks? Still no clue. Edit: it's all quiet right now, no more sirens or anything. So weird...

I'm on Clinton and Houston it's been kinda quiet around me.

My neighbor texted right after and asked me if I knew what that was, when I said I didn't he told me he was going to walk over there to check it out because he could "smell something weird" (I know, not a good idea) but he never got back to me. He lives in the back part of the building facing Houston, I live in the front and don't smell anything so far.

Last week I was visiting grandma in bay ridge BK and also heard/felt a huge explosion. I don't know what it's called, but the pressure in the sewer tunnel I guess overloaded (?) And the sewer cap blew off.

FDNY was also spraying down cars and sewer caps within range, assuming to prevent fires. But the smell when you stepped outside was rancid, so I'm assuming it could've been similar to what you experienced

I remember the night of Sandy when the big one on 14th and the FDR blew. I was walking home to 27th Street from Pete’s Tavern a little before midnight, just by Gramercy Park when it went…there was a huge explosion (scared the crap out of me) and the whole east side sky lit up blue for a solid 15 seconds.

Just some random NYC shit probably - unless you’refeeling the hot blast of a nuclear explosion you’ll be ok most likely

Probably a truck driving over one of those temporary metal plates that get put over active work sites under the streets.

The usually Twitter feeds I look at to figure out if something is happening (the NYC Emergency Management one, and FDNY alerts) have nothing. Con Ed's twitter also doesn't have anything, so nothing major.

Probably a manhole fire. I responded to one a couple weeks ago. They do go boom depending on what's underneath. Can also create a smell, such as a plasma like smell from electricity. Would also explain the sirens, but not on citizen. Did you find that power is out in the area?

A transistor exploded on the block I was on in midtown a few years ago. I thought we were under attack. Another block further away people had started gathering outside to see what the issue was. We all thought it was terrorism.

Nothing on twitter or the news all night til I found out the next day it was a transistor. That would be my guess here

Shotspotter is trash

One of their c levels was using a sock on Twitter to attack people rightfully calling out that their tech as trash and that they lie about their stats

Like not bend, straight lie

Can confirm, I had one blow just 50 or so feet from me. Blew out my damn ear drums I couldn't hear for a few minutes. Felt terrible for my dog too, fucker was so scared. We watched the whole thing just go ablaze. I called 911 and I couldn't hear their responses I just kept repeating what happened for about 2 mins and my location and eventually the fire department came followed by con Edison

El yucateco is good that’s for sure. I’ve branched out to order the pack for each season of hot ones and some of those are damn good but no brands as solid as el yuc. I’m partial to the Caribbean one.

Either fireworks or a blown transformer. 99% of the time. No need to freak out. It’s the city.

Oh, it sounded like they were coming from the west. Those babies were powerful, been living in NYC for more than 3 decades and have never heard anything like it. In any event, thanks for letting me know, really appreciate it.
