The orange belt isn't a complete loop. It ends in Elizabeth township and starts again in Bethel Park. It was pretty well marked except through Robinson

There's a Google maps overlay that you can find if you Google " Pittsburgh Belt system." It isn't 100 percent accurate but it helps.

Driving it not during busy holiday travel conditions. I give you credit for trying though. It is an average adventure at best, too much traffic to really be enjoyable. I like the Yellow Belt journey better.

I had no idea what all those colored belt road signs meant until Rick Sebak told me.

We drove the orange belt before. It took us around four and a half hours but we stopped for ice cream. We live near it so it was always on our adventure list.

In high school I had a friend who used to take LSD, pick a belt and drive the whole loop. This was in the mid-80s, when the belt system was well marked and LSD was plentiful.

Back in the mid-80s I would travel the belt system just to drive. Paper maps and belt signs that were behind bushes and trees taught me a lot about navigating the back roads and gave me hours of the best driving a 16 year old could ask for. Being lost and almost out of fuel can teach you a lot about yourself at that age.

icestormsurfing t1_j1n0jsz wrote

I'm surprised that the whole thing is still marked. I haven't tried to follow any of the belts since the 90s.

Allegheny County belt system

>The Allegheny County Belt System color codes miscellaneous county roads to form a unique system of routes in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and around the city of Pittsburgh. Unlike many major American cities that utilize number-coded limited-access roads to form belt systems, the belts in the Allegheny County Belt System are not intended to be used as high-speed routes. Rather, the belt system is to be used as a navigational aid for motorists in unfamiliar portions of the county. Roads that make up the Belt System retain their previous names.

I left Pittsburgh before they delisted that section of the Orange Belt, and moved back afterwards. Got lost near Robinson too with my wife when we tried driving the circuit last year. What was your route through there and the gap between Bethel Park & Robinson? I'd love to try again with better directions!

Imperial stations (Marathon, Circle K, and Coen, all within 150 yards of each other) are $3.20* or less, while the Robinson stations (GetGo and Sheetz) are all in the $3.80 range. There's only 3 miles between them.

Those are cash prices, it's even cheaper if you're in their membership programs.

I used it a lot during high school 20 years ago to play sports all and pick up against other schools. One route followed a belt for nearly the entire trip so it was by far the easiest way to explain directions to other people. Everyone I explained it to acted like I was high.

One time pre GPS, I took a friend to a random party in the middle of nowhere Butler. I got lost and had no idea how to get home...until I saw a yellow belt sign, and knew if I followed that, I'd get back to somewhere I knew how to get home from.

It has major towns/areas listed on the signs for the belts, so it can give you a general idea on which way to go.

turp101 t1_j1pxdit wrote

I remember a Dave and Dave episode about the belts roughly 10 years ago. They did the green and red and yellow and blue and at the end quipped that we may have noticed one missing (the orange) and that they didn't have enough days to travel that far.

Best of luck to you on your journey into the great unknown!

If you honk going through South Fayette I will try to wave! :-D
