It was this generation 15-19 are born killers... we ran thru the hood in the city but not shooting each other like this you were more likely to end up in the hospital from a beatdown
Insiptus t1_it2nyyw wrote
Na man, it's been this way for a long, long time. The worst of it nationally was the 90s, but the violence have been fatal long before then too.
Rodzilla_Blood t1_it38hjt wrote
I know but between 95-2020 it slid but now it's a certain age demographic that's doing all the shooting I'm telling you and when my cohorts were of that same age we had access to guns but only used them in extreme situations

Concentrated poverty aka “projects” should be illegal. Mixed income or nothing at all.
Edit: If you think the city is helping anyone by subsidizing housing in Mosby, whitcomb, Fairfield, hillside, belt Atlantic, etc, you are deluding yourself. Anyone who has spent any significant amount of time in or around these places will tell you they are the most toxic violent environments in the city.
GrandmaPoses t1_it06a2p wrote
What is “nothing at all”? No housing for anyone?
okcknight t1_it0nwrs wrote
The goal should be zero “projects”. For a simple example, build an apartment building with 100 apartments. (Made up numbers) Let’s say 10 will be for low income vouchers. Choose 10 people who currently live in Gilpin, and destroy 10 apartments in Gilpin. Rinse and repeat until there are no projects. In their place, build more mixed income housing. This way no one will be displaced and you also get rid of concentrated poverty, which is a major driver of violent crime.
CharlesJHV t1_it11w5x wrote
Those kind of efforts are an uphill battle. Most private apartment complexes that accept vouchers usually end up changing their policies after accepting subsidized tenants because of cases where damage done to the apartment far exceeds that of a tenant that’s employed and paying for the unit.
Your heart is in the right place, and you’re right about the problems of concentrated poverty, as you put it so well. That type of solution would introduce a lot of new problems to be worked out
Otherwise though I like your idea and the intentions behind it

Great, we love the giant ass projects near Church Hill, no need for other areas of the cities to experience the joy.
NuttingOnNutzy t1_it44b4p wrote
Get out of your neighborhood a bit. Other areas of the city do experience the joy. Living next to any of the private apartment complexes in RVA that accept vouchers is no different than living next to a RRHA property

Yes, but only those "other" areas. Not "the" areas.

I don't know why you're getting down voted so hard on this because you're right. It's the best way of getting poor kids to do well because they end up being susceptible to the peer pressure to do well in school rather than the opposite.

Section 8 housing broke up the Fall Hill neighborhood in Fredericksburg. Eventually those apartments were no longer considered "dangerous "

They're getting downvoted cause they originally offered no explanation of "nothing at all". Follow ups don't matter on Reddit it's not how the site works.

It is absurd as a society that America thought to just lump all the poor people together and thought that would work well.
RVAforthewin t1_it2x69a wrote
This happens all over the globe and is nowhere near an American problem.
nilsrva t1_it2xgv8 wrote
I never said it did not happen elsewhere, it is still an American problem just as it may be a British problem or Korean problem etc…
