Hi! Considering a move to Richmond, had a few questions though.

  1. Can anyone describe the dating scene in Richmond for males in their late 20s-30sv
  2. What other cities would you say Richmond is similar to?
  3. How is the bar scene in Richmond? Also, other activities y’all really enjoy?

Thank you in advance!

You can use the search bar to find the answer to this and many other questions. There's no need for you to spam this sub with questions that are already answered.

Richmond is similar to Austin or Portland 20 years ago. Or a southern version of Brooklyn.

Its getting pricey as people move in, so we are at the stage where all inquiries about moving are met with outrage from people who feel pushed out, but in real life you won't experience it.

Bar scene is very brewery driven. Not a club town

  1. Download OKCupid, change your location, and see for yourself.

  2. It’s like a small NE city, with a southern vibe. People say it’s similar to Austin, TX.

  3. I’ve only been to a couple rooftop bars and they were really nice!

Edit: It’s also nothing like Portland, OR.

It is my understanding that the dating scene in RVA is almost as hot as that search function.

Transplant from Austin, grew up in Chicago burbs. For #2:

RVA, in my opinion, is very similar to Milwaukee. There are traits that remind me of older Austin, but it's not really anything like present day Austin. The culture, people, architecture, industries, climate...none of it line up.

MKE is this totally overlooked city with great character, diversity, small skyline, and a scruffy vibe to it. MKE is trending up, just like RVA, but isn't in a warp speed boom like some other smaller cities. If I had to pick another city, albeit a much smaller feeling, it would be Knoxville for the same reasons as above.

Welcome to r/RVA where we get angry at people with legit questions about moving here for “spamming” the sub, but we upvote any low-quality shitpost with opossums, chicken wings on the street, or the 7291st photo of a cat that lives in Lowe’s.

We hope you enjoy your stay and consider us for your next home :)

Richmond is nothing like Portland or Austin, now or even 20 years ago. Very different population, very different outdoor experiences, different economic base, different nightlife. Here’s a clue, no one is writing Richmondia. If Richmond is similar to any other city it would be Durham, and a little bit of Milwaukee or Grand Rapids.

Whatever makes you feel better about the hypocrisy, I suppose. I don’t see why someone with legitimate curiosity and questions about our city (even if they are common) is “spam” but all the aforementioned memes that have been run into the ground and don’t spark any real conversation or debate is totally OK.

For the record, I’ve been out of the dating pool/bar scene for a while now, so I didn’t feel knowledgeable enough to answer OP’s questions. Just trying to make people feel welcome when a bunch of posters are being snarky for no good reason 🤷‍♂️

I really enjoy how every city sub reddit has the snarkiest people. I get the "why" but it's just hilarious how it's a "sky is blue, grass is green" fact of reddit.

I will agree that the Lowes cat posts are kinda wearing thin. I am sorry I missed chicken wing posts cuz I'm kinda fat and love chicken wings. Haven't seen any opossums on here either, but I am not on here regularly.

I can't really complain about the quality of the posts since I have not originated any on this sub. I am but a lurker.

Richmond is terrible. The food is disgusting, everyone has STIs, the breweries serve literal cat piss, and rent is exorbitant. There are seven active serial killers who hunt both night and day but the police are paid off and simply let them kill. I was abducted three times last week and narrowly survived by, in one instance, killing my attacker with a possum carcasse and, in the other instance, by gnawing off my own left hand. (Which leaves me without either hand. Long story.)

The water tastes like bakers chocolate. The schools are mostly on fire. The Mayor is a cat that lives at Lowes and who keeps increasing property taxes, and 98 percent of the native population is named Percival Strahan Bonner, or something equally silly. You are taxed for not having tattoos and twice a year there is a parade through Carytown wherein the locals cavort abound demanding blood sacrifices. Also the city council has the right of PRIMA NOCTA.

But yea bud move right the fuck on in.

Eh, the summers in Chicago are probably a bit nicer. Further north I think it really starts to get comfortable. August/September in KC can be awful, hot and or humid. It used to snow a lot more when I was a kid, now the winters are mostly like RVA just a tiny bit more cold and a bit more snow. It's a good town but I live in RVA for a reason 😆

An old therapist once described Richmond as the biggest “small town” she’s ever lived in.

As far as dating goes, I guess it’s fine and so long as you’re not from the area you won’t have to worry about running into people you don’t want to (at least at first).

I don’t go out very often anymore, but used to, and I think the bar/nightlife scene is decent enough. I’m in a couple Facebook groups where people from NYC and Nova seem to do nothing but complain about how boring Richmond is. I’m from here and didn’t fully appreciate it until I was in college (Almost 30 for reference).

The past two years have been a bit off, but there’s usually something going on every week/weekend. Depending on your interests though, it may not be every week (or month) where something super exciting that you’re interested in is going on.

If you decide to move here, I promise everyone will be more than nice to you in person. Ngl, a lot of Richmonders are kinda salty about the influx of new people moving in and contributing to increased housing costs. However, if we ran into you at Ardent or Hardywood (or wherever else) we’d almost definitely forget about all that and would be pretty excited to hear about where you came from and how you were liking Richmond.

As a CYA, YMMV haha

To be fair people get way too hungup on the winter. Everyone entirely ignores the most amazing summers ever. 70s, sunny, slightly breezy for like 2 straight months. Its summer nirvana. The humidity is null compared to the bullshit we deal with in RVA. In WI and MN you can actually spend all day, all summer long, outside and not be at risk of heat exhaustion. So much more to do when you aren't hiding from the sun like that level in Mario.

And winter is cold, yeah. We have heaters in buildings and cars for that. Its not like Richmonders spend a lot of time outside in winter. You only deal with the biting cold between the door of a building and door of your car. You have proper winter sports too if you dress right. Ice skating (also have indoor), snowshoe, cross country ski, ice fishing, snow mobile

Austin texpat here too! Always said RVA feels like Austin in the 90s when I was growing up. Carytown especially like south congress back then. Don’t want RVA to be like Austin today though
