this is going to be as effective as making the growing/possession of certain plants illegal , ie this is a stupid waste of time/manhours and is only going to encourage a black market

tbc i dont support harrassing anyone with deepfake porn , but the fact of the matter is that you cannot stop/prevent it , it would be much more effective to just grow up and learn to ignore it and treat it as childish play ; but ofc these prudish and sexually repressed cultures are basically immature children themselves so ofc they cannot do that XD

I partially agree with you? I don't think they can police deepfake porn effectively, but I do think they could police harassment with it effectively. Those are two very different situations. Which mostly points out it'd probably be easier to police this under the standards of something like revenge porn.

exactly , just like we dont need different rules/laws for killing someone with a screwdriver vs a hammer vs a gun , its murder , the crime is murder , the method is just a detail/mechanic , its relevant to an extent but the murder is whats important

i guess im arguing intent vs results or something [ethics, kant, whatevs] ; ie the if the crime is harassment/assault/etc then focus on that , the particulars should not be the crime [even if they are relevant to the specific case obvs]

imho the only reason that our societies are concerned about porn is because we have created an arena for it to be 'pornography' in the first place , ie its taboo ; if we didnt have this 'nudity is bad' immature/nonsense running around in our heads then these things wouldnt even be problems in the first place , but i realize thats a relatively unfeasible ask in our world atm

I wish them the best developing the bill, nuances and all. Trying to understand what the university analyses say on the societal effects of pornographic deepfakes, to be blunt, their conclusions are largely not positive. Given the track record of these scientific institutions (depending on the university of course but generally speaking, highly regarded like Rutgers & one analysis they have), it is one reason why I wrote my flair... How often have we come across perspectives online that push solely for adaptation, not regulation, in such tech circles? I don't mean to insult those who have that perspective, but given what most university analyses are giving on the issue, calling for some regulation, it seems only right. Sure I'd love a world where erotic/pornographic content can exist more freely, especially since I'm an ultra filthy cybernetically-modify-my-body-to-have-ten-penises-and-ten-vaginas-before-entering-the-next-stage-of-the-singularity pervert. It's just... how do we build such opportunity for all, rather than only empowering the already powerful like what the Rutgers analysis talks about?

No but it's not technically their nudes is it. There probably has to be some more complicated legislation written out to deal with how it is made, where it is shared and the types of punishments available to courts. You know shit like this takes longer than you'd like to get implementated and clearly it still isn't in many places worldwide.

This is appropriate legislation that largely should be the case. It allows people who are targeting and essentially harassing people with these images to be charged with additional offences.

Idk how you get to "it can exist so not worth trying to stop". This exists on a spectrum - what's better, a couple thousand desperate people storing deepfakes on their local computer, or having those deepfakes freely distributed for millions of views. Outside of view count, the former will also slow momentum

I'm kind of impressed that they're considering these things before they become major issues. Often with new technology, basic, common sense regulation can be years behind it becoming common place.

This tech was out 6 years ago , it’s too late to stop it. They would have to prove individuals that the person didn’t know it was deep fake and after awhile they will drop it.

It probably wouldn't be used to charge individuals in many cases but rather to discourage sites from hosting it. You can't stop every instance, but you can make it so it's not the new number one category on pornhub.

There are rings of individuals who do this, targeting specific individuals around town. It’s a thing.

This isn’t about locking people up for accidentally sharing, it’s about the organised groups who snap pictures of specific people at the gym or in macdonalds or wherever. It’s super creepy.
