I really hope this isn't another Johnny Manziel story happening before us.

I mean kind of what I meant, really more of I hope this doesn't become a college athlete obviously gifted with this talent and is going to publicly and disastrously throw it away just as it's starting to reach the NFL level. If there are better examples then sorry, Manziel is just the closest that comes to mind.

I hope he makes some time on his calendar to talk to Ryan Leaf.

Edit: Highly recommend Ryan Leaf’s podcast documentary on his life. It’s called “Bust.” Just fantastic stuff. And I don’t even like podcasts lol.

No doubt. Not looking to get into an internet catfight.

But I think things like draft order, Ivy League degrees, size of conventional military (I'm looking at you, Russia), salary history, and other quantitative metrics are not indicative of future performance. Humans are complex.

If this was anywhere that other than Texas I'd probably be laughing but knowing the cops in Dallas they probably just went after him because of who he is. There's been stories about the cops going into bars in Texas and arresting all of the people inside for public intoxication.

Like, sure, there's gonna be anomolies, but you gotta remember for every one of these feel-good undrafted/late round picks, there's hundreds of guys who are lucky to float around the NFL for a few years. Stetson could very well be the next Tom Brady/Brock Purdy but he's more likely to be a back-up at his age and his size which isn't necessarily a bad thing either. Plenty of successful college QBs don't pan out in the NFL.

People want to compare him to Manziel but I got news for you, Bennett works his ass off and his dream was to play for UGA and win them a championship. He lived his ultimate dream. Whatever happens now is just cherry on top. As a Dawgs fan myself I am in no way disappointed or angry he did this. Work hard, play hard. He will never have to buy a drink in the state of GA again if he doesnt want to. Texas may be another story 😂

−13

broad_street_bully t1_j6f0nt7 wrote

My thought is that even Bennett knows he's never making much money in the NFL.

But he's got 2 titles and God status in a college football town where his money will never be any good. He will take a few years to "go off on his own" and do "very important business things" that are all propped up by UGA boosters.

Flash forward 5-10 years and he will have a few lines of passive income from not-very-specific sources and will roll back into Athens to assume a mostly no-show $250k/yr job that mainly consists of showing up at booster events to help ring out even more money from boosters.

apatel150 t1_j6f1fap wrote

He is so arrogant and egotistical in any interview he gets. Just his facial expression and attitude when he is talking, puts me off. And that’s coming from a University of Georgia graduate.

He will be the next Menziel. Or I hope he does. Someone need to put his attitude in check.

Yeah. I hear ya.

While I have personal thoughts and opinions on the situation, I also have nearly two decades of experience around college football and I can guarantee that the thing I described is Bennett's worst-case scenario.

If he's lucky, he'll rack up $1M+ as a late-round pick that hangs out as a 3rd-stringer for a few years. He'll then walk straight into a previously setup hard-to-fail "president" role in some boondoggle heavily influenced by a big UGA booster.

Come 2030 or so, he'll come back to Athens and really set up shop for three more decades of living in the 1% of Clarke county so long as he makes weekly appearances on top local shows and travels to fundraising events.

Seeing quite a few Manziel comparisons, but isn't Manziel's schtick the fact that he was highly regarded out of college as a #1 overall pick before crashing? Stetson isn't even in the 1st round. Two very different stories and set of expectations.

YEESH.

“Glenn Smith, a former Dallas Cowboys scout, believes the arrest will impact Bennett's draft stock. He had been expected to be a 4th round pick. “He’s a 5’10” guy so you’re already going to have scouts start knocking him. He’s not tall enough, now he’s out drinking till the world looks flat, now he’s out till 6 in the morning, now all of a sudden things start stacking up against him," Smith said. “Beauty is in the eye on the beholder. Someone will take a shot on this young man.”

VoltronicEnergy t1_j6h45yh wrote

Amused they called UGA for comment. They probably going “what does that have to do with us. He on NFL track, he is no longer here.” Drinking no good, especially if hoping for multi-million contract. Best to save partying until after get the windfall just to prevent losing it. How horrible if heard, “Lost and drunk, <insert top player> suffered career ending injuries when <insert drunk induced injury>.”

Bear with me on some history here.

Prohibition in Georgia was a bit weird. Most of the state was aiming for total prohibition, except one little pocket.

Savannah refused to enforce any part of Prohibition. Exactly why, we'll probably never know, but I would say that Savannah was already in its shift from purely a port to a destination city and saw prohibition as a barrier to that goal.

The State of Georgia threatened to step in and enforce Prohibition since the City refused.

Savannah's response?

They petitioned twice to become an independent state, entirely separate from Georgia. I love to think about the alternate timeline where Savannah is free from the bullshit of most of the rest of Georgia (Atlanta, Augusta, and Athens are mostly fine, it's the rest of the state that's a sea of madness and stupidity). It would likely be, essentially, a second American city-state, á la DC, and likely nearly as progressive. Not quite as much, and there's a couple decades that would definitely concern me as to how the city would handle different things, but I can't imagine it being anything but significantly better.

Sure its trashy and he likely has an alcohol problem but comparing him to Manziel is a stretch. He isnt a major NFL prospect and Manziel didn't win one National Championship, much less two. Manziel didnt amount to shit. Bennett is already a legend. If he wants to ride off into the sunset drunk as piss he can do what he wants. Most likely though he will buckle down and get this shit under control.
