Apparently 1883 is the prequel. I couldn't find an answer on Google if you can watch it 1883 before watching Yellowstone.

Never in the history of entertainment have you needed to see the prequel first. That wouldn't make sense.
no, and there will be plenty of other 'prequels' and spinoffs. just start with the original and see if you even like it
No.
What's the point of calling 1883 a prequel if you don't have to watch it first
Prequels are set chronologically before original works, but are intended as a thematic response to the ideas in the original media, and are written assuming that the people who watch the prequels are already aware of the events in the original work
The point of calling it a prequel is that they hope a good part of the audience of Yellowstone will also watch 1883. They say that some of the characters of the new show are ancestors of the characters in Yellowstone and that way they can call it a prequel.

It isn’t a “prequel” it is an origin story. Theres a difference, one expands on the other.
No
I haven’t seen either but for clarification you get Direct & Indirect prequels and sequels. Direct meaning it’s connected to the story and adds value to tell earlier parts of a story or a continuation of a story and indirect basically meaning they exist in the same universe but the story doesn’t exactly have to be connected.
1883, set in the titular year, follows the great-grandfather of the main protagonist of Yellowstone which is set in the present day, so no one from the former is alive in the latter. The main connection is that both protagonists are part of the Dutton family, 1883 just shows the origins of that family as they move across America.
Subsequent series such as the upcoming 1923 follow the next generation of the Dutton family and I assume that there will be more series that continue this trend until they reach near-enough the present day.
> follows the great-grandfather
I'd argue the protagonist is actually his daughter.

I watched it all out of order
I didn’t even finish 1883 seemed like a show that didn’t pay attention to its own previous episodes. Let’s just say the language barrier quickly disappears.
Yeelowstone is losing me as a viewer as well
Highly recommend the first season after that I enjoy certain stories about certain characters. This current season really is rubbing me the wrong way. I won’t give any details to avoid spoilers

1883 doesn't really add any impactful new information to Yellowstone.
It's connected yes, but it's very much its own distinct story.
