Totally agree. This show was very well done, funny and enjoyable. I don’t get why it didn’t last longer. This one hurt me a little when it ended so early.

my "controversial" opinion or whatever is that the jokes on New Girl rarely land for me but the ones on Happy Endings do a TON. I love this show and try to spread its good word.

Easily one of the best shows ever made.

It was so smartly written.

iamgarron t1_iwbpj9r wrote

It's not just the writing. It's that the rn hair cast had such good chemistry you could tell they were having so much fun making the show and that energy oozed through the the screen

16

ty_jax t1_iwbkm5q wrote

Completely agree. The writing was amazing. Why did it get cancelled?

5

emmapepper t1_iwa76lh wrote

Rewatching at this very moment. I have been trying to convince people to watch it when they say they're going to rewatch New Girl.

pishposhpoppycock t1_iwad4te wrote

New Girl was so-so... but Happy Endings blew that show out of the water in terms of hilarity (well second half of Season 1 onwards. The first half was meh).

Wayans Jr. was ICONIC and 100x better on Happy Endings as Brad than he was as Coach on New Girl though.

128

KO620181 t1_iwafgyt wrote

Coach is nice and all, but Brad is a fantastic character. There’s no one else like ol’ Brad.

Well, he did happy endings first, then shot the pilot for new girl, and when happy endings wasn’t cancelled, he stayed with happy endings. But I’m glad new girl brought him back.

6

zeroxray t1_iwe51nb wrote

new girl would've been 100x better if Coach stayed. Winston was a odd character

−2

Look_to_the_Stars t1_iwcol5e wrote

Did pilots for both New Girl and Happy Endings. Both got picked up so he decided to go with Happy Endings, which is why Coach moves out after the first episode of New Girl. Happy Endings got canceled after 3 seasons, so they brought him back as Coach on New Girl.

2

JustAHorseWithNoName t1_iwaqor5 wrote

Wayans was always the weakest link of New Girl IMO. Compared the hilarious and career defining performances of Greenfield, Johnson, and Morris his seemed just okay. It makes sense that they cut him out for a while after the pilot tbh

10

VitaminTea t1_iwatqj8 wrote

New Girl didn't cut him; he shot the pilot before Happy Endings was renewed. When it was, New Girl chose not to recast the role and introduced Winston in the second episode to replace Coach. Wayans returned to New Girl when Happy Endings was cancelled.

TheEgonaut t1_iwc4pmp wrote

It’s crazy how difficult it is to rank those three. I do appreciate the irony that a show with “Girl” in its title’s best characters are men though.

PornoPaul t1_iwaslj9 wrote

New Girl was best when Jess was gone for that season she was "on jury duty".

I disagree. My favorite new girl episodes are season four.

9

Chataboutgames t1_iwcnilu wrote

No way. Like I get she wasn't the best part of the show, but that was after the show's peak and Reagan was an awful arc. Even of you don't like Zooey Descahnel, her chemistry with Schmidt and Nick is a big part of the show.

2

PornoPaul t1_iwgty15 wrote

I'm the opposite. I actually think she's great, and while I enjoyed her chemistry, I found that without her, the chemistry for the guys was allowed to flourish. I just happened to like that chemistry far more.

> Penny: Casey Wilson’s character is probably still single, though she’s spent a lot of time and money on the apps trying to change that. “I’d like to say that she’s happily doing well, but I don’t think that has been the case,” Wilson joked. She has been pretty successful in her career, however, and has visited a couple of White Lotus hotels — or really, tours of where The White Lotus filmed its infamous shitting scene. She has been catfished many, many times. > > Dave: Zachary Knighton imagined that his character has gotten into MFTs, which are like NFTs, but more built around cheese somehow. He is a big Elon Musk guy, paid for a blue checkmark on Twitter, and become a big fan of Harry Styles, primarily through his work in Dunkirk. Dave takes Harry Styles as major fashion influence, has seen Don’t Worry Darling “millions of times,” but does not know his work as a musician well. Dave is also a gigantic fan of, specifically, Jared Leto’s take on the Joker. > > Alex: Elisha Cuthbert’s character has leaned hard into the wellness space, and is perhaps a minor influencer in her own right, and she is definitely steaming her vagina and peddling snake oil. She’s adopted more pets and keeps naming them Tyler (like her parrot and her snake), and has a side gig as a DJ. She was also definitely in the Capitol on January 6, but not for the same reasons as everyone else (she thought it was about trying to “save the cows”). > > Max: Max was also in the Capitol, and probably in Nancy Pelosi’s office, because he is, as Adam Pally reiterated, a force of chaos. He’s had a career in politics sowing some of that chaos, but has since taken up a job at the New York Post where his pun skills have been put to use causing further destabilization. On a more emotional note, Pally pointed out that he would love to revisit the storyline around Max’s break-up with James Wolk’s Grant over the fact that Max wanted to have kids and Grant didn’t. If the show were to return, Pally would want a more dramatic arc for Max there — though he’d want to add that Max might also be in Texas, hosting a podcast with Joe Rogen.

They did a reunion Zoom show like many tv shows during 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Sadly I don't think the video is available anymore online, only the part with Dave is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrbwTh_dVU8

Instead of reading old script like most show do, they did the show like an extra episode that's set during the pandemic.

22

TheOrangeSplat t1_iwatrdx wrote

Before the pandemic zoom episode, they also did a live show-type read of an episode taking place years after the end of the 3rd season. It was great! If I can find the video I’ll post it

Eliza Coupe is so brilliant in Happy Endings I was delighted to see her in a new show called Pivoting which I really enjoyed (and was well reviewed/received), which was then promptly cancelled. Pivoting was ok and it was refreshing to see Maggie Q in a non-action comedic role for once (after being unceremoniously killed off from Designated Survivor lol), but Eliza shined on Happy Endings, especially with her on screen husband Damon Wayans Jr.
