Reply to Black fly in May? by jessesparkell
If really will friend on the weather and where your are planning to visit. The southern part of the state will usually have black fly hatch in early May, but it's more like early to mid June for the hatch in the White Mountains.
But it will depend on the weather. If it is warmer then normal, they may hatch earlier.
Typically, long sleeves and long pants will protect you, and I use bug repellent on my face and neck. If I'm doing something that will make me sweat I'll wear a bug head net mesh over my head.

Reply to I found this map, I don't live in NH (Florida but family might move), whats going on in New Hampshire regarding Transgender people (I'm trans) by Inannazami
I think the reason is is flagged as risk "within 1 within cycle" is because NH is the only "purple" state in New England and is susceptible to laws be loaded in one session then reversed in the next session

I usually try to be a voice of reason to people asking questions about NH when many post - "sorry, we're full."
But - I can assure you that you will not be happy in NH. Your douchey attitude is exactly what makes people who move here complain that the locals never make them feel welcome.
"I'm looking for a home that isn't a colonial - a more modern style in X area of the state" - will get you welcome here. "you dumb fucks keep building and buying colonials, what the fuck is wrong with you" will get you ostracized. You'll have a hard time making friends here.
We are the live free or die state. you are free to think whatever you want. But when you interfere with others... you are not going to like it here.

If your need to thaw a water pipe, open the fawcet and use a blow drier.
But - If you're house has adequate insulation - probably not much to worry about

Your well water is well below the frost line and will not freeze - nothing to worry about. Septic - no concerns at all. Other concerns will depends upon how well your home is insulated, as some homes see water pipes freeze in temps like well see for the next few days.
You have been using wood heat is to be aware of cold areas in your home. We have been using wood all winter, but will be turning on the heat for a few days. We don't typically heat our upstairs unless we have visitors, and it can get very cold up there and don't want bathroom pipes to freeze.
Pay attention to how cold it can get under your kitchen sink - a pretty common spot for frozen pipes as the kitchen sink usually sits on an exterior wall and under a window. Many people in older homes will open up the cabinets under their sinks to let warm air circulate. I know people in really old homes that will leave their sinks dripping, as moving water takes longer to freeze.

Reply to The Mt. Washington Auto Road? by [deleted]
I don't mind the road, and the Mount Washington Weather Observatory is such a unique Mt top feature, that I'm glad the road is there if only to get the crew to the summit.
That said - I hate the line for pictures at the summit. I wish Hikers were allowed to bypass the line. Hikers are usually under a time constraint to get down in daylight, and waiting in line for an hour is a pain.

Reply to As a single 30-year-old man, should I move to the Manchester area? Looking for social/cultural advice. by [deleted]
I'd say it depends on how you plan to meet women. If your are going to meet in person in bars and clubs - Portsmouth and Manchester are your only chances in NH. I think of the two - Portsmouth might be a better choice. If you're looking for online dating - Concord is central enough to get to most parts of the state within an hour.

Whenever someone posts about moving to NH, a percentage of dipshits who've never lived anywhere else crap all over Manchester and bitch about how expensive Portsmouth is - without your ever taking about your budget of where you're moving from. Manchester is a great little city - there is crime, but nothing compared to most cities and most of the city is very safe.
If you are single and looking - Portsmouth and Dover are the best places to look as there are more young singles living there, and more of a night life
If you like the outdoors, skiing hiking hunting etc - check out Littleton - a hidden gem Imo. Concord is very central to everything and downtown is improving. Rental vacancies statewide are about 1%.

As an independent, I'm getting texts from both parties, and some from both congressional districts. Add in the texts asking for my opinion / polling and the fewest texts I've received has been 3 in a single day. The high in a day has been around 10. I reply stop and only around 1/2 confirm you've been removed - but more come from a different #. I can't wait for Wednesday.

Reply to Moving to NH…in the winter?! by WHOLLY_GUACAMOLE
Do you know where you'll be living yet? And have your ever driven in snow? In general - the further north you live, the more you'll need 4wd or awd. Further south you can get by with front wheel drive or rear wheel drive if you have snow tires if you know how to drive in snow and ice. If you're new to snow driving - go with Awd/ 4wd.
As for NH- it was a culture shock for me when I moved here 30+ years ago from a deep blue state. Not the fact that it is a purple state - but that as a battle ground state with the first in the nation primary - campaigning never stops- constant visits, TV ads and debate with one of the highest voter turnouts and a knowledgeable population. Lastly - despite the reputation, you'll find granite staters very welcoming.
Good luck

I used to live in Meredith - you should be fine there in the first 2 weeks of May from a black fly standpoint. It's not typically very warm that time of year - so long sleeves is fine, though the have been times when it's very warm - as you said - it's New England. As for Manchester - if you're in the central area, you'll have no issue with black flies - as the concrete isn't conducive to black flies. If you are staying anywhere with a lawn (garden) - you'll probably see some black flies in the first half of May.
