not everything is a complaint, or an argument I just stated my opinion on it...chill man. you are putting words in my mouth.
the reason I'm dubious is because humanoid robots have been in our cultural zeitgeist for years, but have proven over and over to be an incredibly difficult task.
anybody can SAY they are doing it, it takes action. that's what i'm lookin for.

NOW it is yes, but before Optimus was revealed to exist I was also extremely dubious of their ability to follow through.
same for this, I am dubious that they can do it, but would love to be proven wrong.

I'm not saying they aren't, but I've seen plenty of serious people try and fail at making a mass producible humanoid robot.
even Honda failed with Asimo.
big names don't guarantee success.

they should be able to choose...we all should.
it also shouldn't be a permeant decision...
the most just way of doin things would be to let people do what makes them happy, as long as they aren't hurting anybody.

Reply to My human irrationality is already taking over: as generative AI progresses, I've been growing ever more appreciative of human-made media by Yuli-Ban
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: humans will never stop being creative. we will always do art, its baked into our species.
with that said, the JOB of artist will go away. no company or average person would pay out the nose for art from a human (unless you are rich), when the synthetic media machine can do it much "better", faster, and for free.
humans will literally be too busy to care about all this though. because its not just art that AI is going for, its all jobs. we are all about to be in the same boat. how do people deal with a post money world? how would you get an artist to make your idea if they don't want to without money? heck if I know...maybe you can't...
I do think it will be hard singularity and I think people will probably be too busy freaking out about the super intelligence talkin to them than whether or not art is still a thing people may do anymore.

Genuinely, is there any point in continuing to make art when everything artists could ever do will be fundamentally replaceable in a few years? by [deleted]
Frankly, I'm of the opinion that AI will either be so incredibly good that we cant imagine it or we all go extinct. It will be such a huge fundamental shift in both our society as well as our species that it may just be the most important thing we do.
Personally I want it to be good obviously...but if we all die, then it is what it is. I'll be dead, so I doubt I will care either way. still, what's the point of being so wound up about a potential bad future, when its certainty is not guaranteed?
We humans cannot predict with any real certainty what the future holds for us, that much is true, but what we do know is that AI will be a huge part of it, and work might be phased out completely because of it.
Now the million dollar question is obviously: what do we do when we don't have to work?
Realistically there is no "real" answer to this, as I've said, we cant really know how everything shakes out.
You're right that there isn't infinite resources on earth...but we wont be solely bound to our planet forever, there is infinite space around us and thus functionally infinite resources among the stars. But there's an even simpler way to make it so you can live your dream life of excess, FDVR, matrix level VR. You can live infinite lifetimes, do as you please for as long as you please.
Boom problem solved.
BUT that too is something we are in the dark about. We just don't know how it will shake out for us. Could be infinite torture with no escape...or infinite pleasure...who knows. But nothing we say here in this reddit thread will change the inevitable answer.
What you are looking for is an answer to the unanswerable. We can't know what its going to be like till it happens. We can't know how people may react to the change (though given our history violence is a usually a good guess >.>)
The answer is, we don't know. Nobody does.

AI will take over every job eventually...
I don't see what's wrong with the "do what ever you want" argument? in a post scarcity world, where people aren't forced to work to survive...people should be able to just do what they want? sure some people may never even think about a human artist again but like...who cares? that's their choice...as is making art even with super amazing AI being around.
If your argument is "oh well AI will it SO much better that nobody will do it anymore...maybe? I doubt it though? for example, before photographs painting was the best way to "capture" nature, but the second photography took off suddenly that wasn't true anymore. did painting go away, never to be touched again? no obviously not. or how about digitized music? people still learn how to play the panino, whether its on a real piano or a synth one or even just straight midi.
To me the process of making something, the end result of a work of art or even the gaining of new personals skills that it might have taken to make said thing are what will be important to people in the end.

so yeah...just do what ever you like if you enjoy it. pretty simple and straight forward to me.

nothing to do with hope. technology has been pretty consistent when it comes to advancing over time. just look at all of human history and count the years between major advancements. its pretty clear the trend is accelerating.

huh?
progress accelerates, last year was fast, this year will be faster. it wont take a year.

I'm just looking at pace of change. we suck at exponentials, so any prediction that FEELS realistic timeline wise will be too slow.
its also really important to remember that once you start feeling and seeing the exponential change, it means we are close to the extremely quick part.
once the lake is halfway full, it is only one doubling away from being full :)

I think eventually we will get there in the same way that image diffusion has evolved in the last year.
I doubt we will have anything *INSANE* at first, but it will still be impressively long compared to what we have now (cog video)
I have no idea how good or bad it will be, but I've seen older AI's do long form video before by training on car or Minecraft videos (something on the lines of 10 minutes or so? I forgot where that was tho...)
Its just funny how sure people are that I'm too optimistic, when literally every week in the past year we got a breakthrough and the comments are always something like "WOW THAT HAPPENED FASTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD!!!" or "ITS GOING SO FAST!"
progress gets faster, and last year (2022) was a real speed up, we all felt it. this year will be even faster and if the right shit gets made, the right combo of AI, its over. we just need one that is good enough to self improve. how or when that happens is anybody's guess realistically, but I have a strong gut feeling its gonna be some time this year.
regardless though its gonna be a crazy year.
