If it was “never meant” for spouses and kids, it’s odd that they are just now starting to have a problem with it. I was there 97-01 and there were plenty of families in those apartments JSC has been on a race to the bottom since the mid 90’s. Sorry for your situation.

Just be aware that while the river is very slow, you are still paddling up river on the way back. My wife and I found this out in our canoe

This is true, and unlike the southern option, the housing costs up here, especially in Berkshire and Richford are very reasonable. There are lots of border stations up here where you cross into Canada and most of them are very quiet- no wait. About 45 minutes north of any of these towns an access to the east/west highway (10?) on which you can drive straight into the city.

I think my “If you’re single you’ll be fine” assumes that there is any housing you can find or roommates, so I might have been a little overly optimistic

If you want some interesting insights into the profession follow /r/teachers. From what I have gleaned, we’re not great but not terrible. Indiana and North Carolina come up often as being pretty bad. It ranges a lot. Poor towns with people just starting out. $40,000 (maybe less in some). Rich towns with a masters and decades of experience $100,000 is possible but rare.

I’m a teacher in the northern part of the state. If you are single you’ll be fine. I have a wife and two kids and house and mostly living on my income. It is very tight. Rural schools generally pay in the 40’s, low 50’s for BA only. I have a masters + a lot of years and am just over 60. If I was in Burlington I’d probably be in the $80-$90K range, but I’d be paying on a $500,000 mortgage instead of a $100,000 one. It’s all relative. Don’t expect to be able to live an extravagant lifestyle, but you should still be able to spend some on fun.

People rave about it. I drove down one day specifically to get some but they were closed. This reminds me I need to give it a try again

I live near Richford. You can find some beautiful properties in that town for pennies. I would say that this area is solidly red. Trump flags are everywhere. However in true Vermont fashion, they will probably pull you out of the ditch with their unnecessarily large truck if you get stuck. That being said, Montgomery is pretty liberal and Enosburg is very nice and pretty mixed in it’s politics. If you want more info on the area DM me.

Keep in mind that the trip from stow to Smuggs is at least 40 minutes because the road over the mountain is closed. As a northern Vermont person I would suggest you check out Jay.

The thing that occurred to me the other day is this- Why doesn’t a GPS app make these warnings as part of the data attached to the road. They can do stop signs, traffic, road construction etc. They should make it so the second you turn on to this road a red warning shows up making clear that vehicle must be under X length to travel on this road beyond X miles. This should be especially true if there are GPS apps specific to truckers.

I saw a Dollar General truck today stopped in Hazen’s Notch (rt58) this morning in Montgomery. A gentleman had flagged him down and advised him of his mistake before he got too far into skinny parts (and one lane stone bridge)
