Sounds like your experience comes from buying a home in a shitty part of town. And they're called fly over states for a reason. Not everyone has this same experience

Move to the West Side of the city west of park ave. Look near Worcester State. Elm Park area is pretty good too. North side is safe but not great

If you want to live in the city stay on the west side. Newton Square, Tatnuck, Salisbury, even elm Park/highland st is pretty good. Otherwise look into Shrewsbury
