We absolutely need to organize! One of Springfield's biggest problems is that right wingers have gotten organized and they've taken over the school board under the guise of "focusing on academics", and they'll do the same to City Council if they can. We need to get together and organize, just so reasonable people get a voice.

I feel like the politics here with regards to development is a bunch of greedy developers vs a bunch of selfish NIMBYs.

Like the University Heights development: the Sunshine/National intersection is a TERRIBLE place to have a house because of all the traffic. (Source: Me. I lived two blocks from that intersection for three years.)

But also, the developers have ignored the neighborhood and just tried to bulldoze their way through.

Ugh.

There's a lot of dislike for James River Assembly in the community in general and on this sub in particular. In my book, it is well-deserved, for reasons enumerated in other comments.

That said, you probably can't convince your parents to go to another church easily (if at all). If you're more comfortable with your grandparents' church and they live nearby, you can see if they'll take you with them to services.

Other than that, I understand that The Venues and National Avenue Methodist are both very welcoming and certainly smaller than JRA.

I think I'd choose Springfield over Iowa City. It seems like Iowa would have every problem Springfield does and then more, and it wouldn't have Springfield's good qualities.
