I hate when people bring up endowments when talking about higher ed like they are some magical pool of money that can be dipped into at any point in time for any reason. Endowment numbers that the public sees are an aggregate number of the value of all of the endowed (IE: invested funds created to sustain a specific thing) funds.
An endowed fund isn’t easily fungible. In order for money to be removed from an endowed fund, the donor who began the endowed fund would have to amend their agreement with the university. Most donors are extremely hesitant to do so because they specifically want their money to go towards a program they have a passion for and have chosen to endow a fund to help sustain that program in perpetuity. Even then, the maximum withdrawal rate that is typically allowed is 4-10% per year.
Endowments have no place in this discussion unless there are specific endowed funds that fund graduate stipends/salary, which I am sure exist. It’s a red herring. The money that should be discussed is the general budget. I am extremely curious as to where the $400m plus surplus from 2021-22 went.

Even Villanova is more of a Philly institution than PSU.

They should build a wall and make Drexel pay for it with all the money they make from scamming kids into a 5th year of Undergrad.

Extraordinarily corrupt and ineffective. The only thing he did as mayor was demolish a bunch of abandoned properties that still haven’t been turned from empty lots to anything of use and begrudgingly ban smoking.

Yup. I think there were like two or three houses that were occupied by local residents directly bordered by the stadium, and only one of them initially disliked the proposal, but once they learned that there was not going to be non-residential parking allowed in the neighborhoods on gameday, they were fine with it. Now, I don’t know how realistic a lot of the promises were, but that proposal went above and beyond to try to placate the neighbors. They were planning to dig as deep as possible so that the stadium was no taller than the surrounding row homes and only use it for a limited amount of events per year (Football games and Commencement if I recall correctly). They also were going to build a state of the art childcare center adjacent to campus where local residents would be able to enroll their kids for free, and all stadium related jobs were to have preferred hiring for residents of the local area. It was an extraordinary effort from the university to try to meet the needs of Temple while also not fucking over the neighborhood, and they got spit on.

And when that happens, this time Temple should build the project specifically as a giant middle finger to the community. Temple tippie toes around everything and as an alum it pisses me off. The stadium proposal was specifically designed to be as non-invasive as possible and they couldn’t even explain the proposal at a town hall before being shouted down by activists.

Not soup kitchen allowance. Really good food. And they’re free to leave whenever. Completely voluntary.
Also, in case people can’t tell, I’m joking. We should just have nuclear energy plants with supplemental solar/wind. Human hamsters would be too weird.

You mean shitty little LEDs that use almost no electricity? More like electric heaters, space heaters, the fact that people are cooped up inside and aren’t chilling outside at all because it’s colder than heck.

I haven’t decided between Rhynhart or J. Brown yet, but I did decide to register.
Edit: I have just re-registered as a Democrat, but I feel dirty about it since I personally believe that political parties are detrimental to true democracy.

I may very well re-register as a democrat simply to vote in the primary. It is the actual election at this point. Hopefully Jeff Brown or Rhynhart wins. Will begrudgingly accept Domb. Will be upset if any of the former city council members besides Domb win. Will giggle if Jimmy DeLeon wins.

And the interest earned from those accounts goes straight back into those accounts. That’s the whole point of endowing them. They are typically programs that wouldn’t exist without the endowed fund, or scholarship/financial aid dollars (in Princeton’s case, entirely need based financial aid since they don’t do scholarships). The endowment is wholly irrelevant to this discussion.
Where other university’s thrive is unrestricted giving (IE: Here’s a check made out to Temple for $400,000, do what you want with it). Temple is really bad at getting unrestricted donors, especially with the amount of alumni out there. That’s why the majority of Temple’s revenue is from tuition. .
