>Imagine seeing businesses/capital/professionals/full service buildings *fucking finally* arriving up to Harlem and thinking that's a bad thing, and pining for the days of dodging muggers and crackheads.

  1. full service building means more expensive, its not like you get the extra services for free. Hence people get priced out.
  2. There are no muggers or crackheads in the photo, that is you projecting. I know the 80s had more muggers and crack heads but the person is reminiscing on lost youth and sense of place and you are shouting 'danger danger' like that scared robot.
  3. Where did the post say its a good / bad thing. Just said things change with time. Why you trying to be like that?

What is extra stuff for free is look at the prices of old TVs compared to what you can get for the same dollar (not inflation adjusted) now.

I read the book years ago, I would 100% endorse the audio book over the book. He writes his books to be historical reference, i.e. each point is backed up 5 times and often repeated. If you listen to audio book and maybe miss a few because you aren't paying attention its all good.

I am ok with organized crime making money from gambling.

We all got to make a living.

Alcohol no. That became too disorganized. Weed we will see how this new experiment goes.

Don't forget the state taxes you on your winnings and you can't write off your losers. Not only is it negative expected value (which is fine) but the winnings are taxed.

Both gambling and alcohol prey on addictions. It is not necessarily paternalistic to say that both can cause poverty. We tried banning alcohol once and the consequences were deemed worse than not banning it.

In this case we are legalizing gambling because the state wants a piece of the action. As far as I can tell illegal gambling has been doing just fine in NYC with massive crime attached to it but the state wants their money too because apparently a 200b budget per year isn't enough.

People come here from all over the world with less than that and survive. Plenty of jobs in restaurants, construction if you have the skills. Not the glamourous life depends on what you are trying to get away from.

I would rent a room in sunset park or queens to get started.
