Yeah if you don’t insist on living in the highest COL areas of the state it’s very reasonable. I work in providence but the rents here in northern Ri are more reasonable and the competition for units less insane. If you insist on living in a 2 bedroom on the East Side then no, you will have a hard time affording to live here

Edit: fixed typo

The RI Audubon Society is at asri.org and they have a directory to all of their properties. They’re all nature preserves so no dogs allowed, no hunting permitted at any time. Some beautiful places all over the state

Also, just a few miles northeast there was the Shpack Landfill site in Norton and Attleborough Mass, where a landowner allowed people to just dump chemicals and whatever else the municipal waste wouldn’t take. They received nuclear waste and the contamination wasn’t discovered until the 70s.

There are a lot of landlords like you - I am fortunate to have one, and I know it and I want to be a good tenant in part for that reason. Their retirement is this house I live in. A big problem is absentee landlords and the extraction of increasing rents from unmaintained properties. It’s the assholes being slumlords at scale who are the problem, and it’s difficult to come up with a way to regulate housing without putting such a burden on small landlords that doesn’t ultimately benefit the better capitalized, better lawyered-up corporate types.

I sympathize in part because this was an idea my mom and I had shared for her own retirement, in a three family with a tenant occupying one unit. But the market over the last few years has made that look less feasible in part because of big corporate firms buying up three family and other small rental properties and driving up the prices of what’s left. The same actors who are profiting from substandard housing are profiting from jacked up rents.

Portsmouth has a wind turbine up on top of the hill off East Main Road, there’s a beautiful princess up there at the tippy top and she is waiting for someone from out of town to come and climb up there to rescue her

If it’s offered (and it should be) still have to check the option box. It costs almost nothing to add to insurance (Amica) but I left it off thinking it wouldn’t be a thing and save some money then I got stuck with a $450 bill for a replacement when that would’ve cost like $5.80 a month on top of my premium.

I suggest after this incident calling your insurer and asking about adding the coverage.

I love it. I have a car now but I rode the bus for years and the perspective is just as if I were sitting on a bench looking towards city hall. Thank you for sharing! If it ever inspires you, I’d love to see your take on the Spanish American War memorial on the other side of the ripta building.
