Getting lost and also slipping on something and / or sliding down a steep incline and getting injured.

Sorry for the delay. You have to stay there for seven nights, because they have a strict volunteer schedule. You don't leave the spit for the entire time, and mostly volunteers hang out at the property. Biggest things include raising and lowering the flag and opening and closing the lighthouse, which includes a museum on the bottom floor. I was there in September so I also mowed and watered the lawn. There's so much down time that the retirees just chill and bake and cook and the young people like me were super productive reading and doing art. Super unique experience

Bellingham, Mt Vernon, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia all have things to do in them that would justify a stop. I'm curious why you aren't already spending at least one night in Seattle, given its similarities with Portland in size and things to do.

We got to the trail head around 2 and the lakes around 3. It was in the low 30s when we arrived and low 20s in the night. I wouldn't say any of us were super comfortable but my 15 degree sleeping bag + a blanket + a thermal pad and a sleeping pad helped me a lot. I had a four season tent but it didn't prevent the frost coming forming on the inside of the tent.

Three of us each had our own tent. Slept in an area between the hills that had less wind, though it didn't turn out to be too windy.

This is a great little road trip. My only addition is that even the crazy busy areas like Sunrise and Paradise are easy go access if you arrive early. Which is usually before 830am. That's not that hard to do, even if leaving from Seattle (means leaving around 6am).

Saw this at the IGA in Darrington, and a lot of the contributors appear to be up there. Not a fan personally, but important to know that these beliefs are bubbling up not too far from the city.
