I went up on Sunday and parked near the Rosslyn Metro stop and rode that in - I didn’t run into much traffic at all. It’s a bit of a walk from the Smithsonian stop to the tidal basin but not too bad. It was busy, I’d say there were hundreds of thousands of people there, but it wasn’t overly crowded.
Pro tip: don’t bother with a stroller. If you have a backpack carrier for your 2 year old that would be perfect. It gets really muddy at the tidal basin and with all the crowds everything from crossing the street to navigating over tree roots will be a challenge if your kids in a stroller. Also wear waterproof shoes and bring a change of clothes (or 2) for the kid. And bring extra water - the concession lines looked very long.

If you’re used to FIOS, Xfinity might be frustrating. There are technical limitations to Xfinity’s speed. FIOS’ connection is the same bandwidth both ways: uploads are as fast as downloads. Xfinity is a different story - the connection is asynchronous – upload speeds are less than 10% of download speeds. What that means is I can hear and see my colleagues on Teams calls but I often appear blurry or the sound cuts out to them, especially if I’m on WiFi. If you do have to use Xfinity, it’s best to be on a wired connection - it’s better but not perfect. I wish I could go back to FIOS but I no longer live in Pittsburgh and Comcast has a contract with my county to be the sole provider of tv and internet service here.

I did this exact thing and it was fantastic. I was able to move out of state totally solo. Here’s how it went down. I used uhaul’s movinghelp to hire 2 movers at each end of the trip.

  • night before: picked up truck at uhaul and left my car there
  • 7:30 a.m. 2 movers showed up at my old house, loaded the truck, took one hour (I had moved everything to the first floor during the week before the move).
  • 9 a.m. back to Uhaul, they attached trailer to truck and guided me while I drove my car on it
  • 9:30 - 4:00 drove 6.5 hours to my new place
  • 4:00 - drove my car off the trailer and disconnected it at uhaul in new city
  • 4:45 - 2 different movers unloaded truck into new place took 1 hour.
  • 6:00 - dropped off truck at uhaul drove my car to new home. Had a beer.

Saturn Return is a great one but they’re a little pricey. Also check out the SE Punk Flea Market, it’s a touring vintage collective with a bunch of vendors of all sorts that’ll be in RVA May 13-14. The vintage stores on VCU campus, Blue Bones and Rumors are worth checking out too

There were so many iconic music venues and nightclubs that are now part of the past. Off the top of my head there was The Decade, Graffiti, The Electric Banana, Holiday House, Club Laga, The Upstage, Metropol, Rosebud, 2001, The Turmoil Room, Cloud 9, The Lava Lounge, Nick’s Fat City, City Limits, Syria Mosque, Millvale Industrial Theater, Heaven, Mirage, I.C. Light Amphitheater, Rex Theater

Check out Lawrenceville: Butler St from like 35th to 45th St. Lots of restaurants and such. Also take the Duquesne Incline up and down to/from Mt Washington (park at the bottom off West Carson St)
