“If I don’t like them then I can switch services next season” That is NOT the way it works in most places in VT. Where I live there are 2 plow guys, and they are buddies. Piss one off and neither will touch your driveway. This applies to a lot of services and trades in VT. They just may be the only game in town which allows them to cancel at the last minute and do sub par work, if you can get them to show up at all.

Walls were made to keep sheep in. Yes. It was also a practical issue for farmers where you plow your land and uncover boulders everywhere. You need to move them out of your fields so you can plant, this naturally forms a perimeter of rocks. If you’ve ever tried developing a piece of property you are potato picking rocks for a while. You do pass some old farms that just have big rock piles in the middle of a field. Same idea.

Concord coach can do the same thing. Park in concord NH right off the highway and take a bus into the city. Free parking. Not sure how much the bus is. They drop off in the city somewhere and at the airport which is where I have taken it to in the past.

A dog off a leash!?! Blasphemy. I have had dogs my entire life in VT and for most of that time never owned a leash and it was never an issue. Only in the past few years have people become so uptight over unleashed dogs to the point of confrontation. Now this person can’t fathom the idea of a working dog because.. well they wouldn’t be leashed!!! Must be criminal behavior. How about you just shoot unleashed dogs on sight?

I have been looking for a large house to turn into a multi unit long term rental. Have looked in both Waterbury and Richmond. Found suitable properties that were large square foot residences in both towns, went into the town office and was told that zoning restrictions prevented them from ever being multi units… I’m not going to buy the property and start doing the work with the dream of changing the minds of some small town select board. The housing shortage is a frequent topic on here and nationally but change starts in small town government. Go to your local select board and ask about zoning. It’s boring to talk about but it’s a hodge podge around the state and it’s where some meaningful change happens and how smaller investors can become motivated.

This is what is offered to uvm employees I believe. There’s no walking into HR and suggesting they switch… too big of an organization for anyone to give a shit also I’m sure some of the cuts in reimbursement have to do with negotiations with the employer and reductions in the employer contribution side of things. They probably already know they have a shit plan that is essentially un-usable and in all likelihood had a hand in making it that way.

I have flown from Montreal and saved money also. Every time I was warned about cars disappearing if you leave it there. I know there is an increase in car thefts in VT but that’s mostly opportunistic low level drug addicts. Montreal has more of an organized crime syndicate where things can disappear even locked up no keys. American plates are a tempting target for that.

Generally avoid anything within the UVM health network. Unfortunately they have gobbled up many hospitals in the state although not St. Albans yet.

They are all about the dollar. Paying healthcare workers shit and over charging patients and making them wait years for appointments. Also a toxic work culture within the hospital. Stay clear if you can.

5cent deposit is too low. It may have been a motivator to save your cans in the 70’s but isn’t anymore. 15 or even 25 cents a can would prevent them from ending up in the trash or on the side of the road in 2022 which is the intent of the program it seems.

An obstacle course of some fashion. I said that when this came up 2 weeks ago. I’m picturing tall orange plastic markers that are on a spring mounted to the ground (so when the trucks hit it the thing doesn’t actually break) in a pattern that would force them to weave through in a way simulating the tight spots in the notch with a giant banner OVER THE ROAD that spells out without abbreviations that tractor trailers will get stuck and the ensuing penalties. It will be very ugly and obvious and that’s kindove the point. DM me DOT and I’ll draw up plans.

All snowblowers will say to not use on gravel. Early season before the ground is really frozen sometimes It can dig into the ground and throw gravel. The first little storms of the season I try to just drive over it. Actually broke a car window last year early season from throwing a rock with the snowblower. You need that frozen hard pack underneath and it works fine.

Or just orange plastic stakes that are on a spring and can bobble. The last time I drove up there the words on the sign were scrolling and what it said when I drove by didn’t make sense, if I were a trucker zoning out to am talk radio that sign would not have conveyed the message.

Incentivize? How about stop road blocking. Just now coming from a town office to discuss a large multi unit building that I would like to purchase to turn into long term rentals. Turns out there are 3 different zoning rules that prevent it from being rented as a multi unit. Currently a 2 unit with room for a third and the zoning rules wouldn’t allow it to be a 2 unit but it’s grandfathered in. This is the second property this month where zoning is preventing me from developing a multi long term rental.

I have a vermont castings epa stove and we only use it in the coldest months Dec - March and don’t let it go out during that time. We only use 3 cords at the most. There’s an oil back-up for the coldest days and the shoulder seasons. Not sure what people are using to burn through 7 cords.

Also if you want cheap firewood order a log load. Buck it up and split it yourself to save some money.

The exchange rate is in your favor by 25% although things are a bit more expensive there and taxes are higher ~12% sales tax I think. Probably wouldn’t save much. I have been to the ikea in Montreal because ikea but that’s it.
