I'm spending $2100 a month to live above Walmart and they're closing the Walmart. So I'm now paying $2100 for the privilege to live above Smoothie King

Realistically, it's either the current criminal code or the one Congress is about to overturn. The Council isn't going to make some Giuliani style tough on crime code after this, they'll just throw up their hands and leave the outdated code in place.

There's also no way to spin Congress overturning any DC law as anything but a crippling blow to statehood. You are basically putting together a bipartisan majority that says that DC is too stupid to govern itself and that we can't trust DC voters to select candidates that know how to govern a city.

Anecdotally Rocket Bar still seems to pack em in on the weekends any time I'm there. Always loved it because it does a great job satisfying a wide variety of people in my friend group. You've got the divey elements, but it's also a friendly atmosphere. They'll play sports on TV, but they also play good music. It's easy to meet new people if you want, or you can just hang out with your group and play shuffleboard in the back.

The walkability is awesome. If you live anywhere near downtown you can pretty easily walk to a ton of places that scratch different itches. I can go to Eastern Market, to a Smithsonian museum, to Nats Park, to U Street, etc just on foot pretty easily.

You can get around the downtown core even as a newcomer thanks to the basic organizational system of letters and numbers.

DC has enough to do to keep yourself entertained but not so much that it's overwhelming.

If there's a store like it in DC proper I definitely haven't found it. You can find a lot of the component parts (Big Planet Comics is right down the block from Joint Custody Records which combines to be like 50% of what a Newbury Comics would have) but there isn't something that perfectly nails it.

I'm not entirely sure if the market is there. DC probably has the least room for quirky fun stuff of any major US city. People take themselves too seriously.

It wasn't even like you had to do the research yourself and compare odds. WaPo and other places were reporting on the comparatively terrible odds and Gambet rightfully earned a terrible reputation with even novice bettors before they needed to shop around.

Very lucky to live near Capital One (where I can use the Caesars app) and work near Nats Park (where I can use BetMGM). Honestly works out well where I can easily bet when I want to but I actually need to leave my house so I'm not betting on every little thing.

Been here since 2012. The most I noticed during the Trump administration was that you might hear derisive comments about a couple of places being frequented by White House staff (Blackfinn is one I remember in particular) and you might swipe left on Tinder if someone's job was listed as "White House".

Dem presidents do seem to make more attempts to be part of the city itself, so there's more buzz around like "oh this is that place Biden ordered from". Trump would just eat at his hotel.

Going to GW, the vibe around the 2012 election/2013 inauguration was incredible. I wasn't there in 2016, but obviously things were not the same for Trump.

Similarly after Election Day 2016 the city collectively seemed like it was stuck in a deep depression. People were just sad everywhere you went for like weeks. When the 2020 election was announced for Biden it was basically a parade in the streets of DC.

I love Pentagon City, I'd go there a lot in my GW days a decade ago or so. Unfortunately with online shopping cutting down on mall patronage in general I feel like Tysons might fatally undercut Pentagon City.
