Funny you guys say this. I dated a girl for a while who looked like Sara Gilbert - but that was in the '90s, so it wasn't OP's mom.

Fuckoffassholes t1_je4x6k8 wrote

I reckon OP's mom looked very similar in the 90s to the way she did in the 80s.

2

GrumpyCatStevens t1_je4yh7h wrote

You're probably right, but in this picture she looks fairly close to the same age the girl I dated in the '90s was at that time (she was 19 when we began dating). Also my former girlfriend had straight hair.

1

Mega-Steve t1_je7tr5f wrote

One of my friends in high school (also early 90's) looked just like Sara Gilbert with light brown hair. We gave him no end of shit about it

2

Rev0000 t1_je47fis wrote

First thing I thought. I miss the show

14

Parkotron1 t1_je4d2z8 wrote

The show came back, and is called 'The Conners' now that Roseanne managed to get herself fired after doubling down on some racist statements a couple of years ago.

Most of the original cast is back, and it's... ok.

5

Nomadzord t1_je4g86l wrote

It actually feels like the same show BUT it can be pretty heavy handed with political stuff. Even though I agree with it, it can be a lot at times.

17

Mr-IT-Guy t1_je4vy52 wrote

Well it isn't like the original wasn't a little heavy handed. One of the reasons I loved it.

3

Turakamu t1_je4npco wrote

I don't think her comment was racist in intention, just she handled it poorly. She has been making a little comeback though

0

Muvseevum t1_je4omz9 wrote

Apparently doing Fox News-style comedy. So, the predictable topics.

9

Turakamu t1_je5j378 wrote

Sorta, she was alright on Kill Tony. I think she is trying to figure out her gears again.

1

cheesefondue t1_je5352t wrote

Racism doesn’t have to be intentional. If you’re high on ambien and say something racist, then you must have been thinking those things sober too

After school specials- the memories. My parents outsourced all the ‘parent talks’ to those shows- ‘my mommas going to have a baby’ - that was my birds and bees talk. I was bored during that ‘Ialk’ and nothing they could do could make it interesting.

Great song, and the city boy is also a Canuck from "South Detroit" (i.e., Canada).

14

fuqdisshite t1_je496x4 wrote

as a Michigander, i love you for this.

go find "South Detroit" on a map.

it is generally believed it was written so that it rhymed.

10

theonetruegrinch t1_je4ff2r wrote

> it is generally believed it was written so that it rhymed.

with what???

Detroit doesn't rhyme with anything else in that song LOL

4

MonsieurReynard t1_je4suu2 wrote

It's technically a "half rhyme" with "boy."

Could have said "Illinois."

3

dustin-dawind t1_je56ag8 wrote

I thought he said he just liked the sound of it better than the other options

1

fuqdisshite t1_je5b88k wrote

EDITED

i just linked the quote.

South Detroit = City Lights Boy

it isn't a perfect rhyme, but, it is a phoneticly appealing.

diito t1_je3ok7t wrote

It looks more mid to late 80s to me. That plymouth reliant, or whatever k-car it is could be 81-89. The jacket looks later 80s.

28

SunshineAlways t1_je43xfx wrote

Yeah I think I had my big jean jacket mid eighties maybe? Early eighties they were shorter and tighter.

12

stq66 t1_je57wkq wrote

I‘m reading K-car and thinking about the small Japanese ones. I double checked and saw a gas guzzling dinosaur.

(I’m same generation as OP‘s mum, so I may say that ;)

Placentia newfoundland, thats in front of the lift bridge. No I'm not the op, I just knew my hometown very well. I'd love for the op to confirm that though

Must be, someone else commented asking if it was this location. I’m not sure myself

Darwincroc t1_je51rav wrote

Not OP, but 100% that's right. Boathouse in the back. Liftbridge would be just to the left. She's standing in front of what would be the Chinese restaurant in the late 80s. Jerseyside in the distant background. Super1 Stop just on the other side of the bridge.

To be honest, that looks similar to all 80’s ESSO stations in small town Canada. I was going to guess Newfoundland/Labrador.
