I've been wanting to play a "classic RPG" game. I've heard great things of both games.

Divinity holds up WAY better than BG2...

Well, Divinity did come out 14 years after Baukders Gate 2...

I played Divinity once about 90% of the way through. I've played BG1 and BG2 a dozen times each, including playthroughs of each in 2022.
Divinity is technically better in every way and I have almost no desire to play it next to either BG or Icewind Dale or Planescape.
RazarusMaximus t1_j26jjcl wrote
That's the power or nostalgia and/or a 'first exoerience'
Hasler011 t1_j26uyrg wrote
Yes and no. Divinity didn’t hook me as much as the BG story. Divinity on its own was ok but I just couldn’t care about the world or characters.
BG gave the same feeling I had playing the Witcher where I care about the world, whereas games like divinity felt like fallout 4 to me. Technically a good game but just fell flat story wise.

Divinity Original Sin 2.
And it's not close.

Baldur's Gate 1, then 2.

Need to play BG1 first - you can transfer your char to BG2. Progression baby.
Roxicaro OP t1_j25nqy0 wrote
Now that's a great agument! I just bought both 1 and 2

Awesome, if you like 1, you’ll really like 2. I’ve replayed them many times over the years as several different classes and enjoyed every time.
Osgiliath t1_j26e7cc wrote
I started with 2 and it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Have never played 1.
Mister-Grumpy t1_j25djy8 wrote
I love Baldur's Gate, I've played 1 and 2 at least 100 times each. Divinity Origin Sin 2 blows BG 1 and 2 away with ease. Cannot wait for BG3!

I definitely enjoyed the BG2 story more, but their both fun. I guess it largely depends on what's your personal preference. BG2 was made in the 90s and has a 90s style D&D atmosphere. BG2 is real time turn based. You don't make every single move for each character. It's somewhat automated. I prefer the BG2 classes and Forgotten Realms setting. I grew up reading the books.
Divinity Original Sin is fully turn based and has a very different setting. The characters are a lot different in style. The classes are vastly different. The game is turn fully based. There is much more micromanagement. It's 3d vs the 2d of BG2. I'd say it's much more balanced in terms of class power if you care about that. i thought a lot of the voices/dialogue were a bit annoying, but could be fun sometimes. I definitely didn't like the classes as much, but I'll admit there is much more room for customization. It also has crafting which I'm not a big fan of. BG2 has crafting of a sort, but it's mostly for unique items made from unique items.
JerseyWiseguy t1_j25b1bm wrote
Both are better if you played the previous games, first.
That being notes, it's mostly a matter of preference. Personally, I enjoyed playing D:OS 2 more, but it's replayability is more limited, because there are so few random variables in the game--it's basically always the same game, every single time.

Happy cake day!!!

Divinity is much modern. Same way you can compare BG3 to DOS2. Obviously BG3 will have improved mechanics. Pillars of Eternity 1-2 are good games.

How big is the learning curve for someone who hasn’t dabbled too far into these types of RPG’s? I’ve wanted to play Divinity for so long but it’s kind of intimidating.
RazarusMaximus t1_j26k2h4 wrote
It's not too bad providing you 'save scum' Save often, reload when you make devastatingly bad choices. It's the only way to authentically learn the genre.
Avoid guides for builds or metas, an rpg should be played with your choices.
Briar_Knight t1_j27gfxc wrote
Shouldn't be too bad, the Divinity series doesn't have assumed knowledge of a tabletop game and it's not as front loaded when making a build as most. DoS2 has easy respecing though it's more complicated and restricted in DoS1 (and main character only). There is a learning curve but it's more around interactions between elemental effects and learning how to use those which you can pick up as you go.

If you don't have nostalgia for Baldur's Gate 2, Divinity Original Sin 2 just feels so much better gameplay-wise. Even with nostalgia, I think Divinity is just better, honestly.
Skatingraccoon t1_j25a3v2 wrote
Did you play BG1 or D: OS1? They play rather differently. I would lean towards Baldur's Gate just because it resonated with me more, but I think Divinity is more accessible.
Roxicaro OP t1_j25aklz wrote
I haven't played either unfortunately. I think I'm leaning towards Baldur's Gate, but I'm not sure. Maybe I'll just get both
onemoretryfriend t1_j25bpai wrote
Baldurs gate can be really hard for newer gamers to get acclimatized. But the game is a masterpiece from another time and place, if you can deal with the outdated mechanics and ui the story characters and rpg aspects are unmatched.
Jayce86 t1_j25krjn wrote
Depends? Do you want a modern game with all the conveniences that come with it, or a dated game that looks and feels that way? The former is smoother to play, but the latter has the authentic DND feel.

Baldur's Gate 2 is my favorite game of all time. But, you need to play the first one plus expansion to get the most of it.

Both?

Divinity 100%. Baldurs is a classic but very dated mechanically. Divinity is an absolute blast if you love crpgs.
Hasler011 t1_j26vjxe wrote
BG series has the best story and world building imho. It is AD&D 2nd edition so some things mechanically will be weird like Thaco and lower AC being better, but you can pick it pretty quick
Kimchi-slap t1_j2858xr wrote
Original Baldurs gates are games that I absolutely love but will never play again. Too dated.
RandomBananaHamac t1_j285mp9 wrote
Look, I love both games. I played BG2 when it first got released. I just have to admit it, DOS2 is just a superior game. It's possibly the best of it's genre. Play the first one beforehand to enjoy it even more. If you want the full lore experience, okay Divinity Dragon Commander first. It's an RTS but it's also brilliant.

Might aswell wait till it is out of early access at this point though. You're going have to restart anyway.

I hate top-down games, my brother bought me DOS2 and I felt bad letting the gift to go waste so played it, love the game. Looking forward to finally being able to play BG3 (after having it in my library for over a year) once it's finished in a few months.
flimbler t1_j26wpcp wrote
Bg2 is a better overall experience but divinity is a better game. Which is exactly what you'd expect given the two games relative release dates.
The real answer is - buy BG 1+2 and divinity 1+2. They're all excellent.

DOS2. A big portion of that, though, is because the graphics of BG2 makes my eyeballs bleed.
Briar_Knight t1_j25ebap wrote
Divinity Original Sin 2 would be my vote.
The BG series were great games at the time. They are the first games I ever bought for myself...however they are very very dated and DnD didn't translate perfectly. If you love the genre and want to see the classic then they might be interesting to play but more modern cRPGs are on the whole better and if new to the genre you would be better off playing something like Pillars of Eternity (edit: PoE would be my choice if you want story heavy and a by large more serious tone than D:OS though mechanics are not as interesting) , Dragon Age: Origins or Pathfinder. DoS:2 is less "classic" or "traditional" but that's not a bad thing at all, it modernized and improved on mechanics in ways that make sense and it encourages experimenting (and easy respec and simple character creation means no front loaded build crafting and you don't have research shit before playing which is a massive plus) though as result it plays differently to most.
I don't think you will need to play classic BG to understand the upcoming BG3 though it has a few recurring characters. If you decide to play BG2 keep in mind that it is a direct sequel to BG1.
