Basically the title. I got some HD 660s for a good price ($300 USD) and was absolutely blown away by them. But I had never tried an open back before so the sound would bleed and its kinda embarrassing for everyone to hear what you listen to.

I still got em, but I really don’t wanna let these go especially because of how good these sound and the great price.. But I’m shipping them back in a few days. Nothing else to say really, just wanted to share my pain. RIP to my 660s 😭😭

I would have returned them but I can't give up the soundstage. When you watch porn the actresses really feel like they're in the room with you. Can't go back to closed backs after that.

What, you don't use an Atmos speaker setup so you can pinpoint their position in 3D space?

You're really missing out.

No, I want my roommates to hear my Selena Gomez binges. Nothing shows confidence like not caring what others think of your music taste. I only use closed-backs when I want to keep people OUT of my music.

To add, it's insanely lame to shit on other people's personal taste in music, everyone is different and can like whatever they want.

I regret not calling people out on this when I was younger.

That's definitely a valid concern. One of the main reasons I picked up my SRH1540s was so I could enjoy some music privately while making sure I wasn't disturbing my roommate. I'm that type of person who doesn't want others knowing what I listen to anyway. Nonetheless, the pair looks and sounds great for what I need them for. I still keep the 660S around for more casual video watching, playing games, and for music anytime I'm in our dorm alone.

See thats what I would like to do, but I think getting a pair of closed backs on top of that would be a little to pricey for me at this point

RodRevenge t1_ja02zui wrote

Im genuinely curious about why would you care if someone knows what you are listening to

GarlicBiscuits t1_ja05fpz wrote

That's a good question, so I'll try my best to answer. Music has always been a very personal thing for me, to the point where the variety of stuff I listen to defines part of my personality. I'm quite an introverted and private person, so playing music that others can hear simply makes me uncomfortable (even if they eventually forget about it in the future). I reserve the stuff I enjoy to those who are closest to me since I'm fine with them seeing a piece of who I am. For me, it's also a nice way of showing my respect and consideration to others.

honestly i think anyone concerned this way about this... other than keeping people awake at night or interfering with an acitivity of theirs out of resepect/// is just afraid of judgement and thats not good its a weight to carry that no one likes to endure... i dont even think many people can be comfortable with that. just my take.

hubbu t1_ja31a30 wrote

I've thought a lot before about why I listen with headphones more than speakers and pretty much ended with this thought. Keeping my personality bottled up is a coping strategy to prevent those judgements from starting. I've been working on this for years but it's not easy!

I have my guilty pleasure music that I would rather not let other ppl hear. Is it dumb? Maybe, but I cant fully enjoy the music if I also feel awkward about it.

Well… I listen to opera

Puzzleheaded-Dot-663 t1_ja2d282 wrote

which no one should ever be ashamed of... shows a deep respect of the dramatization of frequencies. opera is amazing.. right now some hip hop just came on my play list.

Id rather listen to some great opera than most pop music these days.

Don't return them if you like them. Just buy some other closed backs and use the 660s when you're alone.

Opposite problem, I have a young kid in the house and when I’m working and he’s upset about something I question the wisdom of closed backs. I have some IEMs to cover both bases.

Don't you have your own room to listen to them?

StrongReplacement926 OP t1_j9zy6de wrote

Its an apartment, and the walls are paper thin. I also have the room closest to the living room so they always tell me they hear my music lol.

How loud do you listen? I can't play music through my Clear at a comfortable volume and hear anything even 3 feet away

rjmoyer2 t1_ja0jn4z wrote

This is my question too. Door closed and at a non-deafening level shouldn’t be a problem at all.

Yeah really. With my hd600 at normal volume I can't hear anything 1 foot away.

blorg t1_ja1yu13 wrote

Even with paper thin walls it shouldn't be audible in the next room, certainly not the point it would be irritating to them anyway. Maybe very faintly if you were listening loud and the other room was totally silent.

I definitely would keep them if somehow possible.

Even though you cannot enjoy them now, it definitely comes a time when you are free to enjoy them without interference.

I blast the Frozen soundtracks, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston in my car through a Fiio BTR5 2021 and I like my music loud. I don't care who can hear it. I've learned to try and embrace what I like. If someone has a problem with my musical taste, that is on them, not me. Show Yourself, Into the Unknown, and Let it Go from Frozen I and II are some of my favorite songs ever. Embrace the type of music you like, it is a part of you that makes you, you.

The level of bad one would reach to ascertain my judgment from their headphone jammage' would already be so fucked up they got more to worry about than me just judging them. Theyd have to be doing some watchlist behavior's to get that attention from me sooo... yeah.

it actually cant be. unless he explicitly bumps convicted sex offenders music........... it cant be that bad.

The sorta music I usually don't want others hearing me listen to is usually really old music like sea shanties or pre 1950s stuff and really experimental electronic genres like plunder-phonics

I wonder low loud op is listening that the sound bleed can be heard by the roommate. I live in a dorm with another guy, separated by 1.5 meters between our beds with no wall between us, apart from 2 monitors I use on the table beside my bed. I asked him if he'd ever heard something from my headphones, he said no, and I tested it myself, I also couldn't hear it. That's why I have the 2nd pair of open back afterwards.

SophiaPony t1_ja281nw wrote

It’s all about confidence. If I can listen to “hi im a slut” with open backs, you can listen to whatever music with open backs. I also have speakers and just don’t give a fuck haha.
