Curious to hear what folks think! What space (retail space, store, etc) do you wish you had near you or around your neighborhood/block?

Adult Bowling Alley
Thrift Store
Karaoke with private rooms like Karaoke rock 21 in palisades Park
More bars that allow music/live shows
DIY shops.
You can rent a space, tools, or whatever else you need in case you want to do work but don't have a large space or backyard. There was a spot in Hoboken but since the warehouse is being demolished and made into luxury apartments I don't know of any other locations on this side of the Hudson.
Edit: The same people from Hoboken moved to Union City and just opened in November. Their website here: https://www.thediyjoint.com/#home
Indoor Sports location. Various sports held inside. Basketball court, tennis court, batting cage (there is one in Union City), and whatever other sports they can fit comfortably.
Journal Square: Aldi with no parking lot
Heights: Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern joint. And a bookstore.
And maybe a couple of pocket parks, but that prob won’t and/or shouldn’t happen.
jsq area, hobby shop, thrift store, electronics store, cobbler, a proper tailor. there are so many food and phone stores here but not much of anything else
oh yes, I second the salad thing. Hard to find.
Journal Square: All you can eat cheap sushi & rolls
I strongly agree with your suggestions, we’ll said
Journal Square: Actual, real thrift store selling only used items that have been donated and nothing else
Paulus Hook: A bodega open 24/7 (or least open until midnight) that serves food at any time of the day and has all your typical snacks you’d find at a NYC bodega + ethnic food/ingredients. Not just overpriced hipster shit.
It’s 2022, there’s plenty of folks of diff ethnicities here, it ain’t all one color anymore. Time for the food/convenience choices to reflect that.
What’s the name of sed sports location in union ?
There’s a consignment store on Bergen in JSQ. I haven’t been inside yet but the window display makes it look like a Buffalo Exchange-level fashion spot, so at least you can thrift clothing.
Just go to Central Paint on Montgomery.
I love going to the movie theaters. I wish we had a better AMC in Jersey City. I like the one in Newport mall. But they really need IMAX and Doby vision movies
There’s a Greek/ Mediterranean place opening soon on Central. At least I hope it’s opening soon. That and Help Wanted signs were on the door for since the summer. FWIW, they already got the furniture, and removed construction paper off the windows. Here’s to hoping it’s going to be a good place.
Yeah I’ve seen that one. It’s been at zero progress for a while, and they’re using the weird cheap table furniture from the prior tenant, I’m not optimistic. Also their proposed menu online looks odd.
A craft store. Would take one anywhere in Jersey City, just hate having to drive to the Michael's in Bayonne.
A real thrift shop, not these expensive, vintage, re-sale spots.
A smaller, more artsy movie theater.
Literally anything that offers some kind of activity for adults that isn't centered on eating or drinking.
Are you talking about this: https://62c08f20c69a1.site123.me/
It feels to me like the owner got their snarky nephew to mock up the website and instead of supplying the copy for an actual site just shared the link to a test site without reading it.
I’m over by Lincoln park and we need a coffee shop/cafe! I also think JC needs some more local music spots we have the locations but we just need em to host those local musicians!
This exists already on Bergen & Newkirk.
oh god no i'd eat there everyday 😱
Jewish deli
Thanks a lot; I will check it out!
Desperate for a bodega in Paulus hook- I think one would do so well where floris nail spa used to be ( next to the greene hook)
Paulus Hook: an ice cream shop! (And a bagel place that’s closer + better than Wonder Bagels.)
HP- a bakery. We have several bakeries that are neighborhood adjacent, but a legit bakery on or around the park would kill it IMHO.
In kinda related news, I have never understood why there has been a storefront vacant on the south side of Jersey across from HP for years... anyone know the deal with that?
Historic Downtown:
Seconding a few that were mentioned above - a good salad place would be great. I’m also craving good Chinese food. Also while Pauli’s Hook has sushi in spades, I have not seen any good sushi takeout in the area though I love Scale.
Also wouldn’t mind a craft or thrift store that wasn’t high end, especially on the pedestrian main area.
I really wish the former bank (Trust Company of Jersey City) that’s on Newark & Jersey Ave could be repurposed into a community space that’s either a food hall like Chelsea Market or a space for local retailers like Artists & Fleas.
I’d love a used bookstore in the area, Word is great but I also go in far less now that it’s moved over to Hamilton Park.
In one of the former dollar stores, would love to have an Ace Hardware store equivalent Home Depot requires a drive and wouldn’t mind a place to have within walking distance.
I'd LOVE some good polish food around here... and surprises me every time I crave good pierogies that there isn't one...
Its not necessarily much closer - or better - but there's a new bagel shop opening near Ibby's... not sure on timing but looks like they were making good progress
I think I’ve seen someone posting on one of the Heights FB groups about selling handmade pierogis but can’t find it anymore. 😞 Someone’s mom just moved from Ukraine and is making pierogis to order. Добра жінка, if you’re reading this, let me know!!
Is the church on Erie and 2nd doing the used book sales again? Know they paused during the pandemic but used to do it every Sunday and I got some great finds there.
That would be a great location!
I saw that sign the other day. Hopefully it’ll be good!
That's amazing!!! Would love to support them if they're still doing it!
Have you gone to Treehouse Cafe on westside?
Good call! A netcost grocery store would be amazing, or any eastern European grocery store
A *really* good bagel place in Hamilton Park!
More gyms! Also would love an indie movie theater or at least something that plays different stuff than the big chains. Like, an Alamo Drafthouse would be great.
- Another movie theater, perhaps in the west side of JC.
- Laser tag/paintball arena
- A comic book shop.
Downtown..legit bagel spot...wonder is meh at best to. I'm talking good hand rolled Jewish bagels, with crisp outsides and soft, slightly chewy insides. A good chicken spot along the lines of el sobroso . Don't even say the spot on Grove. Just terrible. Would love a trader Joe's... Would it be too much to ask for an art house theater/cafe?
That vacant storefront used to be a quasi liquor store. Went there once about 15 years ago. No selection and pricey. It was an emergency. The owners just sit on the property and do nothing with it. It’s a damn shame. It would be a nice deli or bagel shop.
There is a comic book shop in Bayonne and a decent place in North Bergen that I've been to before. Don't know anything about the Bayonne one but the owner of the North Bergen location was a cool guy
Real Bagel shop
Karaoke is needed and I really think it would do well around here?? We’ve got a bar scene , nightlife and mad Asians. Why does it not exist
The owner was an old guy , he passed away. His family still owns building. I don’t know much more than that. Prime location for any bakery, bagel shop type business. Outdoor seating there would be great.
It’s almost like a purposeful hit job though right?
Nah, designer is not responsible for copy. It sounds like the owner was musing out loud while hovering over designer’s shoulder and that train of thought made it to a website (re: whichever’s cheaper)
Commercial space for something like this is at a premium. Something like that would need multplie rooms large enough to accommodate a group of people. Most commercial properties here are relatively small. It's why I kind of hate that any old warehouse or building is torn down just to building apartment buildings. There were some that could have been saved and turned into viable options for things like this.
Plus, if this sub is any indication, the noise complaints stemming from something like this would be through the roof. It would have to in a building with no residents or away from any residential buildings. The one in Palisade Park is a stand alone building shared with a medical office next door.
I always felt like harborside could house something like this. I picture that it could be similar to the shops at Columbus circle, which has a kind of mall and upscale restaurants.
Again, on the hardware store front, just go to Central Paint on Montgomery.
Yes love treehouse and crema but I would love something closer to the park on westside!
No kidding. Went to Central Ave Wonder Bagels once and had to wait way too long for a mediocre bagel while the guy at the cash register (who was also making the bagel for some reason) ranted about how we'd all be speaking German now if Biden were president during WW2.
Screw it, I'll just walk to Hoboken.
Went inside the other day and it’s small but nice, lots of fun coats and stuff like that! The staff were also super friendly.
Journal Square: fresh bread! Craft/hobby/art supplies. Toy store.
Wawa
Downtown Food: Korean, Caribbean, Bagels Other: Indoor pool (know that’s not a small biz), car wash, p+k grocery quality but in the size of key food
titty bar.
ConShineMent is the best! And yes the staff and owner are great. I’ve found a some great pieces at excellent prices there in the short time I’ve lived in the area. Also the sneaker and shoe selection is solid.
JS: trader joe’s
For really good sushi takeout try the Wisp food truck.
My wife and I have been talking about how a karaoke bar with private rooms would be awesome here. Could go in one of the many empty spaces at Hudson Mall and probably do well
Seriously. I would prefer they convert Hudson Mall to more entertainment focused as opposed to shopping. That and Harborside are the only places that can fit these type of businesses.
Snapdragon is technically slightly closer, I think.
We need a ton in this area, like better grocery stores, nightlife, etc.
Ohhhh thanks for the rec! Haven’t been to snapdragon but just looked it up and I think I’ll be making a trip this weekend!!!
A proper swimming pool that doesn't cost a fortune.
I would love a proper restaurant that serves doubles and bakes.....it's a schlep to go to Brooklyn.
Be sure to check out the upstairs. Cool space
that liquor store used to keep the tennis court nets for hamilton park, you had to go ask for them there then put them up yourself on the courts. fun jersey city history lol
begen lafayette / Jackson square:
bagel shop to support public safety building workers and patrons
carvel ice cream
1800 flowers or another flower shop
subway
Ha! That is indeed a fun fact I did not know. Thanks!
Bagels on the Hudson used to deliver to the Heights. Sadly, not anymore (still on doordash if you want to pay too much for a bagel) :)

More gyms and not boutique class style fitness. Just want to go in, do my thing and leave.
