I’m out here thinking “wow I can’t believe there is a redditor in Savoy” hahaha.
I used to do water testing and there was a camp I would test near Savoy. I loved driving on Route 2 up there.

Lol! I used to work at the campground/state forest! Thank you for testing the water for us!

My first thought was "hmm it looks kinda flat for the Alps, good that they're getting some snow too". Then I was confused when I saw what sub I was in

Given that much snow, one might consider stompin at such a location…

Lanesboro is coming in at 3 feet. My final foray into cleaning the snow yesterday was around 7 last night. I thought I would see 1-2 inches to clear this morning, boy was I wrong. I could hardy open the door. I haven't seen piles like this for years. The roads at least are pretty well cleared.
petal14 t1_jcci4k1 wrote
same here in Williamstown - last night I thought "shouldn't be too bad in the morning". then it was like - did I even shovel yesterday!
Not sure the end total here but I don't think it was near 3' in my area of town
BershireKayaker t1_jckum2j wrote
I came home to Williamstown yesterday from AZ! But my 24 yr old son stayed at the house & had it all shoveled😍. It’s enough of a shock returning to winter, so glad I didn’t need to shovel! But we also have some large tree limbs broken or down.
petal14 t1_jcm7te8 wrote
Yes lots of limbs down. Green River road was closed they other day for clean up.

I think locals call that area of Savoy "The Briars" because no signals ever escape it.

Ive been venturing out that way to ice fish, some parts of the state has winter. Not any more though that Snow ruins ice.
Mission_Albatross916 t1_jcbfc6y wrote
How does snow ruin ice? I’m fascinated by ice fishing. Sometimes I see people and vehicles on that reservoir in Cheshire on days it barely seems cold enough to wear a coat and I go home and look up “ice fishing pickup falling into ice” and, boy oh boy, there are a lot of results
kidjupiter t1_jcc8rto wrote
I am guessing they might be referring to how deep snow “sinks” the ice because of its weight? Water seeps up through ice fishing holes, cracks, and the edges of the ice and soaks the bottom layer of the snow making a slushy mess for anyone trying to walk on it. ATVs and snowmobiles make it even worse by rutting it up, which then refreezes.
My definition of “snow ruining ice” is when I can’t ride my bike on the ice anymore because the snow is too deep.
Mission_Albatross916 t1_jcc8wn3 wrote
Ride your bike? On a frozen lake? Cool!
kidjupiter t1_jcc9wct wrote
Studded tires work really well.
cokane_88 t1_jchas14 wrote
Makes walking around in slushy deep wet cold a lot more work and it's more dangerous because you can't see the quality of the ice you are walking on it hides old fishing holes.
Mission_Albatross916 t1_jchav38 wrote
Yikes! It looks so calm, but ice fishing is full of adventure
rizub_n_tizug t1_jchjidx wrote
It also sucks when you dig out a spot to drill a hole, then the wind fills it with snow every ten minutes lol
Mission_Albatross916 t1_jchjn5c wrote
Is it relatively easy to catch fish? And how do people have little wood stoves on the ice
rizub_n_tizug t1_jchufyb wrote
If conditions are right and you set up at the right depth and structure, yeah its like pitch and catch. And to keep warm! 90% of the heat goes up not down. You’ll have a small puddle around the stove but you’re not gonna melt a hole in the ice lol. 3-4” is safe for a grown man to walk on, 6-8 is safe for snowmobiles, 14+ you can drive a full size pickup on
kidjupiter t1_jcijhuc wrote
What really sucks is shoveling off a hockey rink and then having an ice fisherman chop holes in the middle of it.

But seriously, I’m in the camp of being fascinated learning about a town I hadn’t heard of. I may not pay much attention to what I drive past, since I’ve taken rt 2 many times and always pay attention to Florida, MA
Getting back on track : Waltham, very little. It was mostly rain so the accumulation didn’t last long, but I’m not sure I ever saw the ground entirely covered. I got a new snow blower last fall and have only been able to use itonce
