Reading the article, I don't think that's what the judge was suggesting. I think it's a little more complicated than that, and although I'm not certain I fully agree, I think I understand where they are approaching this from.

I think it was more of a "buck your ideas up, sort yourself out, and you can still have a normal life" type speech, especially since he pointed out how the defendant is still young.

It reads to me like "you're a fuck up, you know you're a fuck up, stop drinking, sort your shit out, but in the meantime you're on the sex offenders register. This is your opportunity. Go."

Ummm… this guy is no longer young. He’s in his mid-thirties, with literally dozens of offenses on his record. And sexual assault indicates he’s only getting worse. A “wife and family”, at this point, would be nothing more than punching bags for him, and his pathos would be carried on in his children.

While I get what you are saying, the judge is misguided.

And judge tells him to find a woman and start a family. Fuck sakes.

Edit to add:

Also,

>The court was told eight women, including his mother and grandmother, had taken non-molestation orders against Feeney. He also has convictions for assaults and breaches of court orders, with the majority of his offending occurring while intoxicated. Judge Sherrard said this marked him “as a belligerent, drunken thug, a bully and a nuisance”.

That last sentence is how the judge himself described him, and STILL tells him to go start a family. WTF.

1

Ok_Cauliflower_3007 t1_irxtgva wrote

But it's his first sexual offense so we definitely need to allow him to commit as many more as possible. And given that the judge refused to ban him from looking for women online because it wasn't how they met but his subsequent behaviour that was the problem I would say yes, that's exactly what the judge is suggesting.

*rolls eyes* yes judge we know it was the subsequent assault that was the problem but that bit's already illegal so we were hoping to ban him from using dating apps so when he inevitably breaches that condition we could arrest him *before* he assaults anyone else.

Men haven’t exactly been looking out for other men

To me, a person like that has to prove he is OK with himself before ever considering putting him in a position of influence or authority. If he can somehow manage to turn it around, to learn what he needs to learn, then perhaps somewhere down the road he could become a useful family man.

Bit of a clickbait title - the Judge actually says (paraphrasing) "You're young, it's not too late to turn your life around, eventually settle down with a wife and a family." He wasn't suggesting he get married to cure his horrendous behaviour.

But what really galls me, is that after all of this - and 67 previous offences - he's been essentially let off partly because the prison chaplain said "Ah, he's a good lad really." Priests pissed on their own morality chips a long time ago, IMO, and we need to stop looking to those fuckers for moral guidance.
