I was friends with the family who owned it growing up. The Chef lost his battle with cancer maybe 10+ years ago, his wife was the head hostess, and they got a lot of help from their two kids at the time who may no longer be in the picture due to moving on with life. Not sure what ended up happening with the head Chef situation to be honest, it’s been a long time.

My gf and I were celebrating an anniversary and we couldn’t decide between classyy or slutty carby food.

We went to the boathouse and got a cocktail and some oysters and checked out the view and otherwise got completely ignored for over an hour while sitting at the bar

And then realized there are no rules and went to Bacchus for pasta and duck and beer and wine.

It was great aside from the exceptionally shitty service at Boathouse

Edit- also there was that post here about bacchus hiring underage dishwashers and putting different liquor in different bottles and that’s fucked but we had a great time there.

Chez Max is a shell of its former self. The guy who bought it is a complete muppet and the chef is trash.

They serve “rockfish” year round now but it’s actually Tilapia.

It’s supported solely by septuagenarians with no taste buds.

Ted passed away more than a few years ago. He left control of a large portion of his operations to a charming dragon of a woman named Liz Kincaid, who promptly ran quality into the ground at chez max AND both tarrants locations. They are all seriously mediocre now.

Agreed! I never worked at Max's but I'm an old school tarrants bar vet, and she is just VILE to be around/work with. How a card carrying Karen like her rose so high in an industry that specifically despises people like her will forever remain a mystery to me.

Edit: I misinterpreted what you’re saying. It really doesn’t matter which kitchen I’m in. A kitchen with a functioning stove top, oven, and deep fryer (optional) is all that’s needed.

I left RVA a few years ago, but there are a few places I try to hit up when I’m back. Early Bird is probably my most frequent visit when I return. I also have fond memories at GWAR Bar and Village Cafe. And I was very bummed to hear about Kitchen 64’s closing.

Just moved from Richmond to Charlottesville. My unequivocal answer to this is Penny Lane pub at about 10 AM on match day with a full English breakfast and lots of beer with my mates.

I feel like the proper answer to this is not about the food. It’s about hanging out with the folks that you know you’re going to miss.

Stella’s, their braised lamb is excellent! I treated my bf for their Valentine’s Day special since his birthday falls on the same day and try to make the day more about him since it’s always overshadowed by a holiday, and everything we had was sooo good.

I would make my own tasting menu:

Greek salad at Stella's. Gambas al ajillo from Adarra. Edo's Squid's pork chops marsala with the white beans. The churros stuffed with custard at Taqueria 3 Marias.
