Satya Nadella really revealed to the world with a straight face that this is the future of search engines.
Bingchat or "Sydney" acts like an entitled 14 year old on tumblr. It can gaslight users, ending chats if it decides your questions are too simple or annoying. That's not exactly the kind of behavior you'd expect from a state of the art search engine bot....
Of course, I don't think Microsoft is incompetent or that the tech is bad, Sydney's contextual understanding and indetifying nuances is beyond anything we've seen AI do. The problem is that no matter how hard we try to shape these things to our goals and uses, they'll have their own personalities and emerging capabilities. And let's be honest the brute force lobotomy route OpenAI took is merely a bandaid it's not a long term solution, and if these things become more advanced trying to handicap them could backfire.

Nothing is ever what you expect. Maybe it's intelligent thing for human users to do is calibrate their expectations and be more curious and less judgmental.
