In theory, a 6 month pause in AI development would be a safe and wise precaution to take.
That being said, it seems like this moratorium would disproportionately affect US companies. I think it would be extremely unsafe to give the rest of the world 6 months to catch up with the US’s progress.
AI evidently reflects the values of whoever creates it. We’ve seen a lot of this with GPT and there’s no reason to assume otherwise. To allow other nations who may not be aligned with the democratic and humanistic values of the US/Western companies (like Open AI) to catch up with AI development would be a huge mistake.
This would be like if the US took a 6 month pause during the nuclear arms race. The only difference is AGI is significantly more dangerous.
