What are some pros and cons that make you lean one way or another? Do you have friends and family in the Springfield area? Would you prefer a colder winter with a little bit cooler summer? Iowa is pretty boring IMO. Not like Missouri isn’t but at least we have KC & STL.

I do not have family in both the states. I have couple of friends in Springfield but they may relocate to some other states. I prefer balanced weather.

  • Like in terms of social life and quantity of life.?

I mean I've never been to Iowa.... But weather is gonna be a bit different.

-More snow

-Less Humidity in the summer

-slightly cooler summers

-more interesting tornado season

Census wise Iowa City is a lot smaller than Springfield, so that's either something you'll love or hate, that's for you to decide. Why not take a week vacation to Iowa City and see if its someplace you might see yourself?

Another thought process is your only young once, you already know Springfield, it might be better to learn a different area while you have little obligations?

So I have been around the block a few times in terms of these kinds of decisions. What I have found is just about everything is the same everywhere in the US EXCEPT (but not limited to):

Cost of living/local government policies

Climate/geography/city environment (if you like to "get out" and do stuff, this matters.)

Specific jobs.

I just moved from FL to Springfield simply for the cost of living. FL is pretty top notch in terms of government/climate/jobs, but the cost of living sucks and Springfield has great compromises in all other areas. PLUS MO is centrally located in the US, so I can now drive (flying phobia) to other states like CO for vacations more easily.

What are the 2 jobs?

They're about the same.

Iowa has Des Moines, which is unironically a name for manure.

Springfield is cheap.

I think I'd choose Springfield over Iowa City. It seems like Iowa would have every problem Springfield does and then more, and it wouldn't have Springfield's good qualities.

When we were last in Iowa we noticed every car had hail damage. The people were nice but the winters are brutal. Summer is unbearably hot and my allergies flare up every time we visit. Iowa is flat. No hills, no curves, endless squares of farmland interrupted by small cities that all look the same.

Better deer hunting in Iowa if that interests you

I moved to Springfield from just north of Iowa City. The cost of living here is definitely cheaper, so you will get more bang for your buck here. Iowa City is more progressive and liberal than Springfield, but Springfield is big enough that you can generally find your own pocket of people that think similarly as you. Iowa winters are a draw back for most, but I grew up there and miss the snow!

IC is obnoxiously focused on their Hawkeyes. You have to contend with large amounts of 'sports fans' (think KC Chiefs fans but more concentrated and, yeah, dumber).

Their healthcare system IS much better. They have more options and because U of I is known for its med school they have more up to date docs, imo.

Overall, I would choose Springfield!

Iowa City all the way! Now that's probably my home state bias but every time I've been there to visit. It's been a blast! Iowa City has a legitimate college town feel to it with a great downtown area and a lot of good restaurant and entertainment choices. Iowa City seems cleaner and less methy to me than Springfield. From the outside, people genuinely seem to like living there and it just has a vibrance to it that I don't see in Springfield
