Personally I would say you should wait a few days after donating before drinking

Sounds like a great time, poorly executed. USN sailors know to give blood right before a port call bc their $$ will go farther. Next time, increase iron and water intake.

The nurses literally tell you this. They tell you “DO NOT DRINK.” as you walk out.

Ahahaha. Been there, done that, OP. It sucks the first time, but honestly it gets fun if you do it enough. Hope you're recovering well my guy. Get some more water and iron in you.

Hey everyone, if you are seriously ill, don’t lock yourself in a room. This makes you much harder to rescue.

Not sure where you are, but your blood donation materials are seriously lacking. Here they advise you not to drink for 1-2 days ideally, and certainly not 2 hours after donating (!!!) regardless of how much you've eaten.

People, dont be this guy. When you donate, dont drink the same day - simple as!

As a freshman in college a buddy and I attempted to do this. We gave blood then went down to the local pub that was known to be friendly to underage kids. Unfortunately for us (or maybe fortunately) the bartender wouldn't serve us because it was too early in the day.

When I first started donating in College, many moons ago, it was normal to be given a Guinness afterwards. I never heard of that causing any negative episodes, although I suppose it's possible. It sounds like you had plenty to eat and had only a single beer, so I suspect this is a good example of conflating correlation with causation.

I donated blood at 3pm, cycled 8 miles home an hour later and then went out for drinks because it was Christmas Eve.

Once in college, I was over served margaritas at a Tex Mex restaurant. When we got to my bf's ride, which I have no memory of, I vommed in the front seat. This angered my 10-years- older date; he stopped at a gas station to clean up when inspiration struck. Dude carried me into the restroom (he must have gotten a key from the attendant) and tried to drive away. The attendant noticed, and stopped him from leaving without me. I woke up hours later on a couch in the basement of my dorm, skirt tucked into my hose. Steve, if you're reading this...don't donate blood before abandoning your unconscious date in a gas station shitter!

I am a frequent blood donor and my reading materials always say not to drink for 24 hours after a cycle. My FIL and his frat brothers used to donate blood and then drink (against advice) so they could get crazy wasted for cheap . It’s definitely not a great idea but people do it

18

FloridaMomm t1_ivxtrm7 wrote

Wrong wrong wrongity wrong. This is not an issue of correlation and causation being confused, it’s well established scientific fact that drinking after blood donation changes your tolerance to alcohol. For one thing you have less blood to dilute the alcohol in your system, so BAC gets higher than it normally would from the same drink. The other problem is that blood donation increases the risk of dehydration, which can lead to passing out (or a massive hangover if you drink)

7

ifelife t1_ivxz3tl wrote

I've seen 8 hours but also know the key is to drink little alcohol the day before, if any, and eat and drink as much as you can before snd after your appointment. I have s blood disorder that requires removal of around 500mls about every three months. To make it successful and less pain i follow these rules. Plus minimal exercise or activity the day of. It really does make a difference

I_love_misery t1_ivy29fj wrote

Last sentence I have definitely experienced first hand. I donated blood then went walking to the store on a hot day (about 1 mile round trip) and almost passed out. So yeah don’t do anything that increases the dehydration after blood donation.

Up until around 2010, they would give you a can of Guinness after donating blood in Ireland 🤠

That’s bad! When I donated at college and joked with them as I left “Okay I’m gonna chug a beer now!” And they’re all like “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” And all proceeded to yell at me. It was funny to me because I was kidding. They didn’t get the joke.

It's surprising how fast you go from sober to annihilated after giving blood. Did it once, it was awful.

Also don't eat rum cake or eat wine jelly after donating blood.

Just saying

In the Uk we recommend to our blood donors not to drink alcohol for 24 hours post donation, probably for that exact reason.

yeah, it's not the first time i've passed out around them before, though. as soon as i was leaving the bathroom our bartender friend was standing right outside and they were like "lol if u didnt come out in the next 2 minutes i was gonna unlock the door w the keys"

I donate blood every 8 weeks. On a solid streak right now, I donate today actually! Typically I have a ritual where I buy a special 4 pack of beer to drink at home that night (only one though that night). It’s my own little happy hour.

Keep donating though!

I think it's more related to shame/embarrassment, just like OP replied. They don't want to "make a scene" so they go to the bathroom, not realizing how serious the situation is. Especially with choking, they think they could cough/vomit it up but lose consciousness and no one is aware to save them. It's terrifying actually. Bring a friend on your shame bathroom trips friends!

3

DredLobsterX t1_ivz2m00 wrote

They should but I wouldn't count on it. I was working at a grocery store when an autistic teen locked themselves in the bathroom and refused their mother's pleas to come out for quite some time. No one at the store could find the key. Eventually the mother persuaded them to exit. If there was an emergency on the other side of that door, it would have had to of been opened by force.

Also, don't have sex. You will pass out and it will be extremely awkward for everyone involved.

3

lavendar17 t1_ivz32vh wrote

I would guess that since you donate 10% of your blood when you donate, your BAC is way higher, way faster? Coupled with the trauma of losing so much blood and trying to build it back? Just some guesses though.

As a student in the UK we used to hit the pub immediately after donating. No one passed out after a lot of drinking. You must have had something else going on.

I was able to get away with drinking the same day as donating blood in my younger days. I would just drink half of what I’d normally drink to compensate for decreased tolerance.

I gave blood recently (now in my 50s). I had one drink with an appetizer and dinner after having lunch and drinking a lot of water post blood donation. I was able to get home ok and bought an electrolyte drink on the way home. If I had a second alcoholic drink, I’m not sure I’d be able to get home ok. Going to have to plan dinners with friends on non blood donor days or get a mocktail instead. Place I went to had lavender lemonade. Will go for that next time.

exscapegoat t1_iw0xr6x wrote

Inadvertently made dinner plans on a blood donation day. I’m glad I ate lunch after donation and drank a ton of water. One drink with appetizers and dinner hit me like about 3-4 drinks. I bought an electrolyte drink on my way home and drank some more water before i went to bed. Wasn’t driving. If people are going to drink alcohol at all, after giving blood, leave the car at home. That glass of wine you may be able to tolerate with a full meal over several hours can make you drunk enough to be impaired
