We're kinda language models and we're often bad with math, and they didn't grow up having to spear a gazelle.

Reply to ELI5 - Why do criminals get sentenced to Life without Parole PLUS ten years for example? by sir_cas
25 years is the minimum "life-term" you serve before you're eligible for things like supervised release, which would continue until you die (assuming you're lucky enough to get paroled in the first place).

You just check a box and fill in the amount, it's not like they ask for your drug ledger or trafficking itinerary.

Reply to ELI5: It’s quite clear that alcohol and cigarettes are bad for our health, why are they still around? by kinotico
Because banning anything only creates a black market for it, which drives up the "bad" thing's price and violence associated with it.
It's not the government's job to protect you from stabbing yourself in the eyeball with a fork.
I hardly drink or smoke anymore, but every once in a while when I do, who are you to tell me I can't?
The government did its job by labeling it as being harmful, that's good enough.

They keep the gains, we share the losses.
They'll squeal when tax season comes, you and I will pick up the tab on whatever losses they feel entitled to.
When they get rich we get poorer, and when they don't we still get poorer.
Even philosophically, we gain nothing.
